Naval Piercings & Pregnancy~ ?? a Question??

1723 Views 31 Replies 29 Participants Last post by  deuxceleste
For those of you w/ naval piercings, how long did you leave yours in while pregnant? Anyone leave theirs in the entire pregnancy?
I had mine pierced before I got pregnant w/ ds but removed it around the end of the first trimester.
It closed up and I had it repierced when ds was about 9 months old. I am just about 18 weeks along now, and still have it in. It isn't uncomfortable in any way and wish to keep it in as long as possible.
A friend olf mine gave me a flexible banana bar for later in pregnancy. Perhaps I can keep it in the entire time. Anyone else ever keep theirs in the entire time?

I took mine out around 20 weeks, I think. It was starting to be a tight fit - the ring stood straight out and I felt like I was bumping it on things. I know my friend kept hers in longer. My only 2 stretch marks so far (at 34 weeks) are 2 tiny ones right above and below the pierce mark. They're cute. I would think with a bar, esp a flexible one (is it long?), you could last a lot longer, maybe the whole time.
Hi there...
I don't have my naval pierced, but my good friend left hers in almost until the end of her pregnancy. She didn't get that big though (tummy-wise)...I don't know if that makes a difference. I think she took it out at the end of her 8th month.

If you are going to birth in a hospital...some make yout ake it out..or they'll take it out for you... just check for hospital policy...

i was going to go get mine done but found out I was pg before I got the chance
Oh well, a couple more months and I can go get it done!

i kept mine until about 34 weeks with my Ds. I would have probably kept it in the whole time, but he started dropping about then, and my belly button started turning inside out. I could have probably made it the rest of the way through the pregnancy with it in, but peircings take forever to heal on me, and I just couldn't deal with the on and off infections any longer, especially when my belly was all itchy any way. I may get it redone after this pregnancy, but I really don't look forward to peircing through the scar tissue. I guess I will just go and get another tattoo instead.

Ps. The hospital staff got a little weird about my tongue, and four ear peircings. They reminded me frequently that all of the "metal" would have to come out if I needed a C section. Luckily that didn't happen as they would have had to litterally cut my wedding ring off cause my fingers were so swollen.

I still have mine in - its the barbell type. (32 weeks so far)

my midwife has had one woman keep hers in the entire time - I plan to be her second!
I took it out with my son - I don't want to re-do it AGAIN!
I actually took my ring out yesturday, as I was getting pain around my belly button. It seemed to help a little bit, but now I'm not sure what to put in there. I certainly don't want to have to re-pierce post-pregnancy.

I have done some research on the web. There is the option of fishing line, but it's pretty hard to get a large enough gauge with that, and would still probably need to be broken open again somewhat at the end of the pregnancy.

What I have found that I'm hoping I can find locally is a material called PTFE (poly...something or other... don't ask...) If you look up PTFE jewelry on the web, you can find some online to buy. This material apparently is the perfect thing for pregnant women as it is extremely flexible and will stretch with your body. From one of the sites, it also seems to be a material that would not need to be removed for surgeries.
With my first, I took it out around week 18 because it was beginning to hurt. I tried to put it back in, the hole was open, but the shape of my belly button had changed so much it was uncomfortable.

Not only did I have to give up my cute belly button ring, but my cute belly button never came back after I recovered - it got all stretched out.
(despite ending up 15lbs under my pre-pregnancy weight)

When I saw my new OB this time around, he thought the scar was from endoscopic surgery!

I joke with DH that if I would only consider plastic surgery if it were for belly button reconstruction!

That is totally not true! I can understand the navel ring coming out for a section but not any other piercings. For several years I wore my Hindu wedding necklace every day 24/7 even through xrays and dd's hospital birth. I told them it was religious and they worked around it. They never said anything in the hosp. about my nose piercing or earrings, toe rings, or wedding ring.

Just checking in here as someone who kept her navel ring throughout the pregnancy. My belly button never popped out or anything, so I was lucky. The OB told me early on that I may not have to remove it, just to keep an eye on it. It never caused me any trouble.

It's still there today and hopefully it will last through this pregnancy as well.
i just found these forums, and this thread is exactly the people i've been looking for! hooray.

i'm just 7 weeks pregnant and pretty attached to my belly jewelry (a barbell). i really like the idea of a big pregnant belly with a ball sticking out from the end of it--thanks for posting, you guys. now, off to find the may mamas.

Well at week 19 I still have mine in, very comfortably.
My belly button never "popped out" w/ my last pg so perhaps it won't this time either. I think that later in the pregnancy when the skin is much more taught and my belly extremly full, then I will replace my metal barbell w/ the flexible plastic one. The flexible one is quite flexible so I can see wearing it
through the entire pregnancy. My midwife seemed to believe it would be fine~ actually she was the first person who told me about the flexible barbells.
now about all my ear piercings & nose piercing~ I just don't see those getting in the way

iris0110, I can't believe they actually said you'd need to remove your upper body piercings for a c-section... sounds like they were just uptight.

they told us the same about removing the ring. DH put a band aid on it though, good thing, had 3 section, all with the ring in and a band aid covering it
OK - bad news, I'm now 35 weeks, and was really really trying hard to keep my barbell in.....
On Tuesday I had to have DH CUT it off to get it out, my skin was pulled WAY tight and I noticed last weekend it was getting red around the top hole, it was really bothering me.
I felt SO much better when it came out, although I was TERRIFIED during the whole cutting off few seconds, dh came at me with a HUGE pair of pliers, we couldn't unscrew the darn thing.
My belly button has not quiet popped out, but its no longer an inny, its kinda in between....

Good luck to those going for it...........
I was worried about this too, with my last baby. I've had my belly button pierced w/a ring for 5 years and really didn't want to take it out during my pregnancy. It ended up being comfortable and didn't hurt at all and I left it!
I didn't have a hospital birth, so I don't know about their rules and regs.

Good luck~

Just wanted to add that I also kept my belly button ring in the entire time I was pregnant. One of the OBs in teh practice I went to was pretty surprised when she looked at my enormous 38 week belly with the barbell in my belly button. But noone ever told me I needed to remove it so I didn't.

I took mine out at about 20 weeks because it was really uncomfortable. I can tell you though that I had two surgeries with that (and other piercings) in. The hospital attempted to hassle me into taking them out but I just flat out told them no way. I did follow that up with the fact that they were all surgical grade stainless steel and just as safe as their instruments. That shut 'em up good.

I took out my piercing w/ both pregnancies...

...and I had my hole 'stretched' open to regular piercing jewlery size at the piercing parlor, at about 3 or 4 weeks post-partum.

No filaments or anything like that in the hole in the meantime.

Did get a stretch mark over the taut pierced skin when the ring was still in!
