Two links to post about this subject, both horrifying and eye-opening

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milgram_experiment

Milgram first described his research in 1963 in an article published in the Journal of Abnormal and Social Psychology,[1] and later discussed his findings in greater depth in his 1974 book, Obedience to Authority: An Experimental View.[2]

Daniel Goldhagen has an extraordinary book called "Hitler's Willing Executioners: Ordinary Germans and the Holocaust," which discusses the exact same thing.

If you'd rather follow than think for yourself you can feel irresponsible for your actions. Letting yourself be a passive tool.
If patriotism becomes your god, anything becomes permissible in its service.
My favorite patriotic quote is from Pol Pot: "I want you to know that everything I did, I did for my country."
http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Pol_Pot
