NBC report on C-sections

Okay I'm so mad I can't stand it!!!!!!!!!!!!

NBC reported, or something that barely resembled reporting on the increasing rate of c-sections in this country. The barely 5 minute segment featured a female ob who had opted for c-sections and (was feeding her kid a bottle) when there was no reason for it. She was like, "I recovered so quickly and was back to my active lifstyle and running." The report stated that vaginal birth can lead to incointinence and bascially mothers opt out of teh VB b/c of the ability to schedule their birth (graphic of a palm pilot) It was so awful and biased!

This report made it sound as if c-section were bad and then teh info given was supportive of the c-section!

There's been a lot of press today based on the NIH panel convention and their "recommendations" released this afternoon. You can read more about it in this AP article.

I couldn't believe the NBC report mentioned that vaginal births can lead to incontinence and limit activity!! Are you kidding me?!? So the fact that I could barely move for weeks after my c/s was just a fluke? Or maybe I had a hard time because I actually labored first.

I don't recall hearing anything about the increase in risk of maternal death from c/s.

They're all a bunch of no good yellow bellied bottom dwelling lying sapsuckers.

Of course that's it. Of course, I never really discussed my post-partum pain with a doctor. So, it's not in the records that the incision pain from my one and only labour-free c-section lasted for 7-8 months.

Ladies - it is just so discouraging and frustrating. They will allow women to elect to have a c-section for absolutely no medical reason yet we have to constantly fight for our right to birth our babies vaginally. How messed up is that?! And I will never in a million years understand why someone would prefer to have their belly sliced open and their baby pulled out of them....
While the video of the OB who chose 2 c-sections was appalling, I thought the follow up OB they interview was pretty good. Did anyone catch that? Thoughts?

The one who said that there isn't enough information about the risks/benefits and that we need to "close the gap" in order to better inform women?

As far as I'm concerned, that is a huge cop out. There certainly is enough information to know that spontaneous vaginal births are much safer than scheduled c/s.

Or was there another OB that they interviewed in a different segment?

I'm talking about the OB they interviewed live. She seemed to me pretty much in favor of avoiding C-sections, especially elective ones. Not that she wouldn't do an elective one, but that she would make sure her patients really knew the whole story. For example, you may feel great months after the c-section, but that the initial recovery can be hard. That regardless, c-section is MAJOR abdominal surgery. I thought she also mentioned that the long term issues of incontinence were there just do to pregnancy, not just with vaginal delivery.

Granted, she didn't come out & say c-section is evil. However, I thought she was pretty honest about things. I'm of the opinion that while c-section should only be a last resort, I also believe that women have a right to chose what to do with their bodies. Vaginal delivery is safer & better for everyone for a variety of reasons. However, the risks of c-section are usually minimal & if a woman wants that as a way to deliver, she has a right to it. I know others may disagree. But I am ALL about choices. Hopefully, well informed ones, but choices.

What bothers me is when people are not informed, manipulated, coerced, etc. into things. This is sadly, way too many women.

I hope I'm making some sense....

L, who is doing everything I can to have a VBAC in June!

I hate when they use the ruined vagina forever argument. With proper kegels that is ridiculous. In fact I went from a larger sized diagphram after #2 to a pre-birth diagphram after baby #3. Doesn't sound ruined to me.

WHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT!! Ohhh this argument makes me so fricking crazy!! I am going to have to scour my files and find the study that was done comparing incontinenece rates of the birthing public compared to chaste nun, who had never given birth.... Guess what the results were???????? They were about the same!!!
