Hello

I'm working on a womens studies project about midwifery and am not having the easiest time finding homebirth midwives to talk to. I've been fortunate so far to speak to the ladies at New Dawn so far who are awesome, but beyond that not much luck. Any suggestions? :

New Dawn is great. I don't know of any other midwives that do homebirth. I do know that it is illegal for a midwife to attend a homebirth if they are not backed by a doctor. That is why they are so hard to come by here in NC. Good luck to you!!!

There might be a few at the International Day of Midwifery tomorrow in Raleigh (tho' they might just say they're very concerned homebirthing mamas ) (visit www.ncfom.org for more info)

Also, check out nchomebirth.com/contact the site creator, and you may be able to make some contacts that way.

IMD was very insightful! I did actually get to meet some NC midwives there and that was great. I haven't heard of Lisa Goldstein as of yet. I did try sending a message to nchomebirth but I haven't yet received any response, so I dunno. but thank you guys for your help

Here's her contact information

Fern Kingham Memorial Women’s Health Center (Lisa Goldstein CPM, CNM)
Rt. 6 Box 206
Burnsville, NC 28714
I don't know her, just of her, but she really is a living legend in western NC. When the state stopped licensing CPMs, she was grandmothered into the law, so that she could continue to practice. Since then, she has gone back and gotten her CNM degree to make it easier to get third party reimbursement.

FYI, Rebecca is the site owner for nchomebirth.com and she just gave birth last Thursday so that is probably why you haven't heard back from her. She is a wonderful resource though! Good Luck!

There are plenty of lay midwives in western north carolina, but since lay midwifery is illegal in NC for the most part they don't want their names publicly announced on websites.

Rebecca here, I don't see your email. I don't give out the names of midwives, but i'll be happy to forward your information to them. Email me at [email protected] with your contact info if you need additional resources.

Just wanted to add that Lisa "is" awesome. I also have a dear friend who is CNM/FNP, very knowledgable and who would give you any info, she also lives in Burnsville.

I know one that used to live in Asheville and just moved to Elizabethton, TN. I had a homebirth with her and she's awesome. She still does a lot of homebirths in NC. PM me if you want her phone number.
