NC homebirth?

IIRC NC has made homebirthing and midwifery outside of a hospital illegal?

Has anyone had experience with a homebirth in NC? I will be in the Asheville area.

No it's not illegal. I think using a lay midwife might be, though. Crap...there's a member here that attends homebirths but I'm drawing a blank on her username.

You choosing to hb is not illegal, its Certified Professional Midwifery is...actually its not recognized by the state. There are still practicing CPMs despite this though. There are also a few Nurse-Midwives attending hb (those that have doctor back-up).

I have had 4 hb, the last 3 in NC. I have never run into a problem. In Asheville you should find lots of supportive folks.

NewDawn in Asheville is legal because there are CNM's on staff and they can legally do homebirths. They have CNM's and Direct Entry midwives there. I hope I am describing this correctly...this is the way I have heard Nancy at NewDawn describe it, although I don't know the right terminology (consultation or supervisory relationship between the DEM's and CNM's).

I was lucky enough to find a CPM who attends births in my neck of the woods.

CPMs cannot legally practice midwifery here. Women can legally birth their babies at home, though.
