No its either/or. Although I've met a couple that have been through both schools.
It's possible to become a ND by correspondence in as little as 6 months

I guess what I meant with either/or is if you have an MD, it's unlikely they are also an ND and vice versa.
They would have to study at both schools. In most cases someone trains as a MD and then furthers their education and gets their ND certificate.

My mom had a dr. who was trained in both but practiced under 'MD' more because then he was covered under our medical system. Which worked for my mom because then she didn't have to pay out of pocket.

This is a great question. I can clear this up for you. The answer is yes but they are rare.
There are doctors who have been trained as ND's and MD's. however, they have to be licensed and practice as one of those only. If they practice as an MD they have to adhere to the provincial billing system. In BC that means that they have to charge the patient for nutrition, lifestyle counselling etc. and also must follow treatment guideline for standards of practice. eg drug x for condition y.

Another issue is that naturopathic doctor's are not regulated in all provinces and states. In BC an ND must be a member of the college of naturopathic physicians of BC and have taken the required 3-4 years undergraduate courses and then completed the 4 year naturopathic medical degree at an approved school. There are internet based training courses through the US that are not comparable to the training that a real ND receives. these are usually called 'naturopaths'
If you are looking for a referral to a properly trained ND, use the CAND in canada or the AANP in the US.

I don't believe so, I had an acquaintance who went through the process, it's an intense program with a lot of science, but I don't THINK it gets you to be a medical doctor.

Okay, I swear I posted this as the second post, before so much more knowledgable people came along....but perhaps I just didn't scroll down....disregard this non-contribution
