quote: Jonathan Marks, father of a 1-year-old, is one parent who decided he'd had enough of the kind of spiritual replenishment that Barney and the Teletubbies provide. To keep his love of the outdoors kindled and give his wife some time alone (and get a workout to boot), when his daughter was 4 months old he created a hiking group for fathers that meets every third Sunday.

We hike as a family often. We bought the backpack carrier when our son (now two years 8 months) was about 7 months old. We now have an 8 month old daughter too she is either in the sling (which I sometimes wear on my hip and sometimes on my back) or the backpack carrier. The two year old walks for a while, but we usually do between 6-8 miles so my husband often carriers him for a few miles in the backpack. It's wonderful, we both believe in the importance of getting ourselves and our children out of the urban/suburban environment for spiritual and creative replenishment.
