i hear you on the tiny terrors who will have everything, everywhere. otoh, some people are using shelves for storage, not for decoration, so "pretty" is only one thing to consider. if you have stuff, and it needs to go on the shelves, then it's a matter of arranging it in a way that looks nice and is still practical for storing those things.
i'll try to post pics of my bookshelves tonight. they hold books, music & magazines with a few other miscellaneous items. it's not the most beautiful arrangement ever - can't talk dh into arranging the books for aesthetics. he's so dang practical.

but posting pics will force me to tidy them up a bit, as i think there are some little clutter piles forming.
