I'm overwhelmed and I really need help. I'm trying to read it all (the threads, the literature, etc.)--I really am; but I have a learning disability that makes it hard to read more than a few sentences and retain it. Seriously--to the point where if it goes past 7 sentences, I forget what the first few said unless it truly grips me/fascinates me. This stuff is vital, but doesn't fascinate me.
:

Despite this, I HAVE managed to read "Breaking the Vicious Cycle" and "Enzymes for Autism & Other Neurological Disorders". I can't remember all of the info, but I remember thinking that it all made sense and that I needed to move forward. I'm just kind of lost on how to start.

This is primarily for my son--who is 30mo and 29lbs. He's ASD and he's had REMARKABLE improvement/recovery over the last 19 months between therapies and food avoidances. We are gluten, casein/dairy, soy and corn-free. The gluten only causes constipation--which makes me think he could actually be a celiac. All of which I know can be helped by healing the gut.

I tried Zyme Prime and Peptizyde on him, but he STOPPED EATING because of the taste. Considering the AFP versions.

I wanted to start him on Candex because I KNOW he has a yeast and bacteria problem; but it says to take 1 hour before or 2 hours after eating and he eats every 2 hours...?!?

I wanted to try probiotics, but have no clue how much to give him?!?

I can't afford to go to a DAN Dr. We have one or two nearby, I simply do not have the money and my insurance won't cover it. I have spent COUNTLESS hours on the phone with the insurance company trying to find loopholes for this.

Help...!!

I tried to get through that thread. It's 6 days old and TEN pages long... clearly carrying over from last month--so I was pretty much lost from the first page on.

I'm not kidding--I really have already tried. Thus the cry for help.

(((hugs))) Can your ds swallow pills? That might help the taste aspect. As far as enzymes go.

Probiotics -- the more the better, in general. At least make homemade yogurt (can you do goat's milk or nut milks?).

We can do nut milks. I never thought of trying to make yogurt with them because you always have to start with a culture and I haven't found a way to do that without dairy...? Goat's milk has casein in it--so that's not do-able.

I get that more is better with the probiotics, but how much do a start a 29# child with so that he's not in pain or uncomfortable with die off...? And how do I get around the Candex dosing around food?

He can't swallow pills and isn't a good eater. I've seriously gotten to putting the enzymes in a little water and into a syringe and giving it like medicine--but it got to where he wouldn't come near me. Honestly, he has ASD and has come along REALLY well--so going back to him not wanting to be near me is extremely hard to handle. I don't want to fight him--there absolutely must be another way. The HNI site has changed--they used to explain exactly what the papain/bromaine issue was and I thought it was the strong taste. Now it looks like it's just to accomodate the SpecCarb Diet...?

If you go to www.pecanbread.com there is a dairy-free yogurt starter that they recommend for use with nut milk yogurt.

Candex...maybe try it last thing before he goes to bed if there's a long enough time after eating. Have you tried adding more fat to his meals so he is fuller and doesn't need to eat so often? Coconut oil is great for healing the gut, mild tasting, and can be added to all sorts of things. The "pumpkin pie filling" recipe on pecanbread.com would be good for getting coconut oil into him.

I thought the Houston enzymes were supposed to be tasteless and could be mixed with food. Have you tried mixing them with food? Applesauce is pretty good at covering up tastes/textures if you haven't tried that already.

He may not have a lot of die-off from probiotics. Not everyone does. Extra vitamin C in the form of sodium ascorbate (start with maybe a gram a day in divided doses and increase if it doesn't cause diarrhea) is good for die-off, as are epsom salt baths. Also, if you don't start Candex and probiotics at the same time that will help minimize die-off. pecanbread.com recommends starting with a teaspoon of yogurt a day and increasing slowly to help minimize die-off.
