I am new to the Utica area and 28 weeks pregnant and needing advice on a midwife and VBAC friendly birth center. From my research I've found Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, and Crouse in Syracuse. Anyone delivered at either place? My heart is set on trying for the natural birth that didn't happen for me the first time around, so any help would be greatly appreciated!

You would do well to post this in your geographic forum.

Moving to Finding Your Tribe.

Welcome to mdc, and congrats on your pregnancy!

I live in Ithaca and had a wonderful, midwife attended, vbac at Arnot Ogden Medical Center in Elmira. I know several other women who have vbac'd there, using the Twin Tiers Women's Health team. At Arnot I had access to a jacuzzi tub, a heplock but no routine iv, intermittent monitoring, I pushed on my side, and had a positive birth experience. My partner and my doula also felt that the staff was supportive and positive.

I know one mom who traveled to Coopertown. She had a great vbac and gives them a thumbs up. However, they want to do the prenatal care too and for me the 3hr drive was too much... but their vbac stats are pretty spiffy!

Crouse has more average stats... they are a big medical center and more "comfortable" with high risk moms than Basset. (arnot ogden is also a major med with level III nicu).

Can you ask at a local ICAN group (ithaca's group is here and there is info on vbac and c/s rate there)? Do you have a doula or nurse you trust to tell you the scoop on different providers? In many ways it's your provider (not the hospital) that will have an impact on your vbac options...
