My 22 month old son shows every sign of readiness for potty training, but I can't seem to make a "breakthrough", that is, I can't get him to understand that the potty is where he needs to go! I CD my kids, and I've heard that can make potty learning easier. Paddy has been holding his pee in, for several hours at a time, and does not want to wear diapers anymore. When we were out to dinner tonight he kept fussing and fussing and I took him to the bathroom to check his dipe and it was totally dry. When we got him home and gave him a bath, he finally peed and peed and peed. We've tried letting him go naked and we put his little potty out for him and encourage him to use it, but he always goes on the floor. He will tell you if he needs to poop, and will tell you after he's done it. I'll ask him if he needs to sit on the potty ,and sometimes he will. He is not very verbal, and sometimes I think this makes it challenging for him. I KNOW he is ready, and I know we can do this, I just don't know how to get him to make the connection. He'll just hold in his pee if I sit him on the potty, and as soon as I let him get off the potty he'll go pee on the floor. When and how do you make the breakthrough? I reeeealy want him out of diapers, and so does he! Help us!

Thanks for the replies all. Hipumpkins, you're free to flame me. We used chocolate chips ( at the advice of MIL ) and it worked
: All of the "pssss"-ing and running the water wasn't working. We got desperate. But whatever it got him to pee in the potty.

To another poster, I have considered starting EC with baby brother. Things are kind of crazy around here right now as it is, we are house hunting/dealing with banks/running around like chickens with our heads cut off because we have approximately 4 months to move out of the house we're in. But I still might consider it. Thanks for the suggestion.

My son isn't verbal, yet either so we have a sign for potty. He bangs his chest like tarzan. It's unmistakable..

You might want to get your DS to associate peeing with sound like some EC parents do with babies. Take your DC to the Tub and make the sound ...Pssss...and turn on the tub waster. this will pretty much get him peeing and teach him a sign for it. Then in a few days or a week or so sit him on the toilet and make the noise and tun on the faucet.
Give it some time to sink in.
As for the poop as soon as he tells he hs to go or signals sit him on the toilet and encourage him with grunting sounds. As long as he isn't screaing to get off let him stay there. Read or book abut pottying if you want.

When he does go...simply tell him that now he's got it right. that is where the pee and poop go. I would avoid a big celebration or stickers or anything like that.

Good luck...

Oh I've wasted PLENTY of water doing this already LOL!!! We've been doing the psss thing for about a week, it doesn't do anything yet. He will squat and his face sometimes turns red if he's pooping. We've done the whole encouraging with grunting too, we've done that for a long time actually. I feel bad, we've tried everything you've suggested. Maybe just need more time. UGH where do I get more time? I've got his 10 month old brother to contend with.

I started with ds when he was about 15 months. I would leave him diaperless(playing with him to keep him in the kitchen) and when I would see him start to go I would put our little potty insert under the stream to catch it. I didn't try to move him to the potty, I moved the potty to him. I did this for several days in the morning because he peed more frequently then. I would explain see, the pee goes in the potty and say pee, pee. After a few days of catching some like that I could take him and say peepee and he would try to go.
