I'm totally confused.

I want to CD, but here are the issues:
-I know we're having twins, and they tend to come early/tiny.
-I don't want to spend 100's of dollars on dipes they're gonna outgrow quickly.
-I also don't want to buy something so lousy that i get frustrated with it and lose the interest in CD'ing.

Can somebody recommend a reasonable plan, like:
- what size i should buy, so i'm ready
- how many i need
- what type is the best for newborns who are possibly gonna be small (7 pounds would be a great thing)

Also, since i'm in india, i want to get them ahead of time, but probably won't be doing a lot of trading/returning diapers, so want to minimize sending stuff back.

Oh, and if i could get a pattern, i *could* have a tailor here help me make stuff, but i don't have a sewing machine myself here.

Hope this all makes sense....thanks for your help!!

Well, for the nb phase, since they may be a little early/tiny, you could always go with the preemie size cpf's. You can find those for under a $1, try www.wholefamilymarket.com if you buy over 24 there they are like 90 cents. You could easily stock up on a ton of those, plus I think they offer free shipping on orders over $50, at least they did last time I was looking there. I don't cd yet, not even pregnant yet, but for the nb phase for one nb, I plan on getting 36-48 cpf's for one kid. But, they can also be used as burp rags, which we used a ton of with our 2 year old ds. So, if you want to wash every other day, I would say at a minimum of maybe 48 cpfs for twins. As for covers, I have no idea which cover would be best for itty bitty babies. Hopefully someone can answer that.
If you go to the diaper making forum, there should be some links to free patterns. If not, I'll post some here for you later this evening

I have twins. They came home weighing less than 4.5lbs each. I had them in disposables until they were about 8.5 lbs. I just couldn't afford to buy preemie stuff.

I have about 50 diapers ( amix of AIO, pocket diapers and fitteds) I bought most second hand or off e-bay. I wash every 2-2.5 days.

I know that a lot of mama's who have twins have liked using one-size diapers so that no matter the size differential of the babies the diaper could fit either of them. I'd check out mother-ease one size diapers as an economical option. And then there are always prefolds that always fit a large range of sizes. For a cover I like the bummis super whisper wrap. The medium size range is 15-30 lbs so it will last a long time. I agree with the previous poster that the preemie prefolds would also be a good investment since you are likely to have small babies to begin with. They would great as doublers later. Good luck!

I use cloth on my girls. I didn't start until they were 10 months, and I so wish I'd started right away like you! I won't tell you how many nappies I have, because it's so much more than we need that it's embarrassing. I think that for little little babies, a couple of dozen Very Baby 'true' all in ones with birdseye internal soakers & velcro in the newborn (these start at 6 pounds) and then small sizes (from 10 pounds) would be so easy to use & care for in the chaos of looking after twins in those early months. No separate parts to find or put together. And they are so cute! And even though my girls were tiny, and need premature nappies (they were 4lbs 14 & 5lbs 8) they grew into the newborn size within a few weeks. Your babies may actually make it to 6 pounds, & go straight into newborn. My friend went to 38 weeks and both of hers were over 6 pounds! And as the other poster says, if you needed a couple of packs of premature size sposies, it would not be the end of the world. I'd probably start my stash with newborn size, and use premature sposies briefly if I had to. It may even be there are some ecofriendly, non chemical sposies available, if you wanted a pack or two on hand... Do pm me if you have any questions or I can help in any way.
Oh, and Very Baby make a great pattern (I've heard, not that I can sew!).

My friend has twin girls that were 6 & 7 pounds when born. She just started using the infant prefolds and simple pull up covers or prowraps. She has 36 pfs, 8 covers and 4 fuzzibunz. She said its more than enough for her and she washes every other day.
