SIL in India is having some trouble getting started with bfing. I need a substitute for Lansinoh because I'm not sure they can get that over there. Something simple that you can find around the house. Any suggestions?

She could hand express her own milk and rub it over her nipples and let it air dry. Breastmilk has healing and soothing properties. After it dries she can swab a THIN layer of olive oil over the top. The best thing is going to be her own milk, though.

Breastmilk is the best, but cocoa butter works. Also, if she can find something called "Bag Balm" it is WONDERFUL! They initially used it on cows udders, but when the farmers felt how nice it made their hands, they marketed it for humans. They have it in drug stores here, not sure about there.

I like Motherlove nipple cream but it is pretty simple to make a salve from beeswax and olive oil. There are lots of recipes online. I can share my bookmarks when I get home on Saturday.

Thanks for the advice! Her milk has not come in yet but just a tiny bit, but I'll tell her to use it to help heal herself. Trishy I would love to have that recipe when you get home.

Coconut oil is healing and should be readily available for her. I haven't tried it on my nipples (used Lansinoh ), but I like on other skin. I like shea butter a lot, too, but don't know if that would be readily available there.
