Is it possible to make frosting without using white or powdered sugar? I would like to use agave if that is at all possible. Any ideas would be appreciated!

Vegan frostings or just non refined sugar frosting?

I have a recipe in my joy of cooking for a caramel frosting that calls for brown sugar, but has cream and butter in it.

And a coconut pecan icing with brown sugar but also eggs and butter and evaporated milk.

A baked icing that has egg whites and brown sugar

A broiled icing that has brown suagr but eggs and cream...

You could also do a white chocolate ganche as a frosting and that has only the sugar in the white chocolate...

Any of those appeal to you?

My co-op sells a product called "rice-mallow" which is marshmallow fluff made from brown rice syrup rather than refined sugar. Friends have used it before mixed with whipped cream or cream cheese and have had good results. You could probably mix it with soy-based cream cheese as well for a vegan option.

For my son's first birthday, I just used pureed fruit (cherries & blueberries) mixed with cream cheese and no added sugar. It was plenty sweet IMO and he loved it! It was pretty too
