I have an 11 month old ds who has the worst diaper rash I've ever seen. He got a sip or two at the most of his brothers glass of cow milk yesterday (never had dairy before). He woke up several times crying last night and even nursing wasn't comforting him. He normally STTN. So this morning he made a BM about 30 minutes after waking. I changed him within 10 minutes of him going. Well his bottom is bright red with lots of weeping spots. And some pin prick size blood spots. I've left him open w/ no diaper for the past 20 minutes but it is still weeping and I'm afraid of him going around on the floor with no diaper and it getting infected. I have an all natural diaper cream w/ chamomile, olive oil, beeswax, shea butter, cocoa butter, vit. E, tea tree oil & lavender oil in it. Is that ok to put on him? I cloth diaper and was going put a pre fold on him w/ no cover to let air get in. I just don't know what else I can do to help him feel more comfortable and to heal.

Oh, and does this mean he is gonna have a milk allergy or just due to his age? I know most people switch to cow milk at a year and he is 11 months so pretty close. I just wouldn't have expected this bad a reaction.

Express breastmilk if you nurse, mix it with cornstarch and apply to your baby's bottom. It will work quickly. I would definitely hold off on introducing cow's milk to a child that reacted this way. DD1 is allergic to dairy. I recently gave DD2 yogurt and kefir and she did not react, so I may go ahead with cow's milk whenever I'm ready to have her drinking milk other than my own.

Both my kids have had rashes just like those. When they have had them I keep them diaper free, no creams, spray them eith some breastmilk. I put on some underpants and no pants. Air is the best thing for it!

My 3yr old was extremely allergic to dairy. I found it easiest not to have it in the house. Less fear of exposure.
He also (unrelated to the dairy) gets horrid diaper rash like you describe. Even now that he's potty trained, he still gets a bad rash from time to time. I think he just has a very sensitive butt. Slather it up with cream, put on a prefold and let it air out as best you can. Fresh air is the best treatment.

My dd occasionally gets terrible rashes that looked almost like chemical burns (we have no idea what causes them
). They are so painful that I can't wipe her (warm water rinse only) or put diaper cream on them, though I don't know if it's the cream itself or the rubbing that hurts her. So I gently dab a colloidal silver gel on the area and let it air dry before putting a diaper (no cover) back on her. I have to do this after every diaper change, but it goes away after a day or so.

And if this is the first time he's gotten a rash like this and the only thing different is the dairy, I would definitely hold off. It may not be an allergy, but the reaction may mean that his system isn't ready to handle it yet. Good luck!

when we had thrush (for 6 months), we used GSE-grapefruit seed extract-, made a solution, put it in a spray bottle and sprayed the rash area. it really helped it go away. gse is naturally anti-fungal, viral, bacterial, etc. i have no idea if the rash u'r dealing w/ is the same kind, so it might or might not be a good thing for it. just thought i'd throw it out there bc it worked so well for us. we also used cocunut oil. prob. the best thing for it is air, like other posters said, but i'd also want to make sure it didn't get infected. gse would be good for that in my opinion.

I have miracle cream that has been around since DD was little. I have used that when she has been irritated and it has worked miracles (LOL literally). It's not a natural treatment but it has worked for several different types of rashes. Before we discovered her food intolerances and before we eliminated them, we used it frequently on her anus and the small area around it. She had the classic flaming red ring around her anus and irritation around it. She said the miracle cream made her "butt feel better when she poopied". It didn't fix the rash perse....it just eleviated a lot of the pain.

Air seems like a really good idea. I would let him go completely bare on the bottom and only put the prefold on if you need to.

Thanks everyone! His bottom is still pretty red and weeping in a few areas. He doesn't seem to be in as much pain from it though so hopefully that means it is healing. I'm hoping that his overnight wetting isn't gonna make it worse in the morning. I completey coated his tush though to hopefully prevent that. Diaper rashes are no fun for anybody.

One thing to add that I heard from a veteran mom – when you have diaper rash turn up the water heater (like when you're stripping prefolds) to make sure the dipes get super clean and don't keep the rash going.
