My sisters baby is fixing to be a month old and has had the WORST rash ever since she left from the hospital. They have tried everything from butt medicine to lanolin to monistat, and it is only getting worse and spreading! They took her to the doctor and she couldnt help. She uses disposables and asked me this weekend if I thought cloth would help. I told her I didnt know.

What can we do? I definitely don't have the money to buy her a stash and neither of them are working(they are both on maternity leave, LOL, her AND her husband) and they are already way over their budgets.

What can we do? Her baby's poor butt needs you suggestions!!

(it started showing in the hospital and has escilated to welps all over her privates)

Poor baby! It sounds like it may be an allergic reaction to the sposies. Do you have any prefolds that your sis could borrow for a bit to try and see if that would help make it go away? Prefolds are pretty inexpensive, about the cost of a couple of packages of sposies - lots of nakey time as well!

I really want to beat some sense into her head, LOL. I am going to call her in the morning and ask if she is dead serious about trying cloth.

Any suggestions on how to convert her for sure?

Definitely try putting her in prefolds. It sounds very much like an allergie to the sposies. Is there anyway you can get them to take a pic of the rash? it is hard to describe, but the rash my dd got when she was in sposies was red pimples that turned into big red raised blotches, and then white pustules formed on the blotches. It was nasty.

Lots of nakey time helps too. Also, something I mixed up for my dd (she STILL has such sensitive skin that I have to be super careful what she eats) is
2 oz. Neosporin plus pain relief (cream)
½ oz hydrocortisone cream
2 capfuls mylanta

I mix with a popsicle stick in a small 4 oz. rubbermaid container and apply at every change.

There are some great articles on the health risks involved with sposies. Here is one http://thediaperhyena.com/diaper_dra...nessrashes.htm

Even if they just used towels for a week or so and if there was improvement then they would be justified in the expense of buying cd's. They could seriously buy a day worth of covers and prefolds for about
$50. That would get them started doing a load of wash every day.

I have talked with a lot of mamas that would otherwise be totally opposed to cd. But since their kids are allergic, it's their only option.

Another great healer for the skin is calendula. Use anything with calendula in it and the rash will heal much faster. Also, a homeopathic remedy taken internally will help with Baby's symptoms. poor thing, she must be miserable!!

Have her get that baby some prefolds!!

I bought what WAS gonna be my stash :LOL for $60. I got 12 prefolds (premium) and 4 bswws. Even buying cheap sposies, I would have broken even in 8 weeks or so and that was with a 9 month old. It would have been a lot faster with a newborn.

Sounds like her daughter's health may warrant it...

Does she use disposable wipes?? They can be pretty harsh too. My friend's babe ended up with almost bloody privates. They switched to plain water and cloth wipes and it really helped (even though they are die hard sposies users)

If it's yeast try clotrimazole cream. It's sold in the atheletes foot section at the drug store or Walmart.I had to go to unscented ,sensitive wipes or homemade for dd.The cream should knock it out in about a week.

You can also change recieving blankets into prefolds pretty easily. Or even just fold them up and use them the way they are. She will probably need to use pins because they don't quite have enough nap for a snappi to grab onto, but they really do work in a pinch. When we were first starting out I trimmed some recieving blankets down and then sewed them so that they had two layers down each side and six in the middle.

Old T-shirts also work or an old towel cut up to smaller pieces.

I agree, she should definately toss the sposie wipes. My kids didn't tolerate them well at all. Even if she uses sposie diapers, she should use cloth wipes. My DS was a sposied baby, and our ped said to use cloth wipes because he got an awful rash right out of the hospital too.
