Need help knitting legs with double pointed needles!

520 Views 11 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  DomesticOverlord
I'm almost done with the body of my first soaker shorts, but my pattern says I'll soon need to switch to double pointed needles for the legs. How do I do this? Is there an online guide to knitting with double pointed needles?

Thanks!

I think I've figured it out from this very helpful page:

They're not as scary as they look LOL... just a tip though, I often have stitches fall off at the "join" when there are a lot on there, so make sure the stitches are right in the middle. I also recommend starting out with bamboo-- metal is very slippery!

Have fun

I'll definitely get bamboo or wood needles, thanks! (whichever I can find at the knitting shop down the road).
also, for the size shorts you are making (I saw in another post) you can get 12" circulars and then you don't have to use DPNs at all. SOme LYS carry them and sometimes you have to order them.
Tuckersmom,

Thanks for the tip about 12" circulars. I'll get some of those for my toddler's shorts. However, the shorts I'm finishing now are newborn/small, so I guess no way to skip the dpns....
You're probably already done :LOL but just wanted to add that I like using the magic loop method better than DPNs. I kept losing stitches off the end of my DPNs and getting really frustrated so I figured this out instead and it's great. Good luck!
I prefer to use mini circulars. They aren't easy to find though. They are made by Clover and come in 8.25 and 12"
Thanks for the tips about the magid loop method and mini-circulars. How small circumference legs can you do on mini-circulars? Could I use this for small longies?

Thanks

I have to interject that the mini-circs give me hand cramps. There's just not enough needle there for me. I prefer my dpns unless I'm knitting something quite large.
