I'm taking heparin and progestrone to maintain this pregnancy.
I need to be on a low potassium diet...and I need a good vitamin D supplement because Heparin can cause abnormally high potassium levels and may interfere with the activation of vitamin D, especially in pregnant women.

There goes my home pickled beets and kimchi.
Good thing I'll only be on this stuff for 75-100 days.

This is just so opposite to how I eat though. I as able to download a list of low potassium foods, and high potassium foods. I'll stick to the low list as much as possible, avoid the high list....and not worry too much about the stuff in between.

So, what is a good, easily absorbed, vitamin D supplement? that isn't contaminated with crap that's bad for my unborn child?

I just started heparin shots to maintain my pregnancy, and no one mentioned a thing about low potassium foods.
: I had come across the possibility of high potassium in the blood causing problems... in my own reading... you know, the kind that doctors hate for patients to do. I wasn't sure how serious it was.

They did put me on Caltrate-D, to deal with the bone loss thing.

Soooo... do you have any more info on this? I'm apparently going to be on heparin for more than 100 days... the whole pregnancy. I guess they'll probably take me off near the end... I don't know. My first real appointment is on Thursday.

I've actually been supplementing with potassium to help with a heart palpitation problem I started having right before I got pregnant. Sheesh.

Oh, and while I'm here... I know this is a long shot, but... if the heparin can cause bone loss in mama, what's it doing to the baby? Is it like the ultimate anti-WAPF drug? After all my worrying and taking supplements, is this undoing it all??

I ended up misscarrying
BUT, the most important thing is a live baby.....so just do what you can to counteract the heparin's negative effects
Also, next time, my doc is going to put me on lovenox instead of heparin. It's only once a day

D-Drops are another option. I recently got them and started on them in addition to my CLO.

I considered trying once again to doctor myself during a pregnancy... but... this is my last pregnancy. Dh is completely unwilling to ride this roller coaster again. I'm taking the heparin. I know it's not a guarantee, either, but... I couldn't figure out how to get the blood tests needed to see if natural/nutritional methods were working. I am taking CLO + butter oil, fish oil (also a clot-buster), and many other things that are anti-inflammatory (since this an auto-immune clotting disorder) and blood thinning. I eat garlic and ginger every chance I get, for example.

But I am still taking the heparin.

If heparin interferes with vitamin K... does that mean it would be helpful for me to take MORE vitamin K? I want to make sure I build my baby right! Is the interference with vitamin K the way heparin causes bone loss? From what I've read, my particular blood clotting problem is not a kind that can be exacerbated by extra K. But if extra K would somehow nullify the heparin... then that wouldn't be good. But the idea of intentionally gestating with low vitamin K levels... that just doesn't sound smart....

Any WAP-friendly autoimmune clotting experts out there?

Heparin is NOT a vitamin K antagonist like Coumadin is. BUT it prevents your body from getting rid of excess vitamin K....which can cause a heart attack if allowed to get out of hand. So, avoid foods high in vitamin K while taking heparin. If your hands start to tingle or get numb, get thee to a doctor. This is a sign of high Potassium/VitK levels.

So... no butter oil?

I'll need to get myself some different CLO. Darnit. I really didn't want to NOT have good vitamin K levels. I took regular CLO with my ds, and he still has had a cavity. I wanted to build better teeth this time.

I know, I know... I can worry about that later, when I have a living baby. The heparin is about getting that baby. This is just turning out to be the most unnatural, medically-managed and now intentionally under-nourished pregnancy... it's like I've gone back in time and am a SAD-eating sheeple...

Ok, sorry... I'll put on my big girl panties now...

I know it totally stinks BUT you wont' have low vitamin K levels because your body isn't going to be getting rid of it easily.....they should be just fine.
