Hope this is the right forum. I need some help with my 2.5 y/o little boy. I have 2 toddlers, a 2.5 y/o and a 1.5 y/o. Both are in daycare. I work out of the home full time 8-4 M-F. My husband studies out of the home full time for his PhD. Here is the problem, and it may seem silly but I just don't know what to do about it. Due to being in daycare my boys have constant runny noses and colds. All winter long. It's been that way since they started daycare. Nothing serious, no ear infections, fevers, no asthma or allergies, etc just constant viral runny noses. My 2.5 y/o always has his finger in his nose...I tell him no, get him tissues all the time, but his finger is always up his nose. I am not really in favor of giving him an anithistamine. But I want him to stop. He is in the proess of potty training so we are working on a lot right now and we use time out for disclipline, but I don't really want to use time-out to keep him from rubbing and picking his nose. DH jokingly suggested chili pepper on his fingers. I would love to just not do daycare, since I know that's where they are getting the colds, but that is not really an option for us right now.

Anyone have advice?

I don't think there is much you can do about nose picking other than constant reminders and offers of kleenex. Unfortunately.

I wish I had a magic solution on the daycare yickies. I run a home daycare and in the last four months I have had Hand Foot and Mouth disease, four separate colds and a bout of stomach flu... and got it all from the SAME KID. It is crazy. I give my DD an A-C-D multivitamin and she seems to fair better.

are you still nursing either or both of your kids? In the past when I have had this happen (like, every winter) I have pumped extra milk and given it to ds. When I started slacking on pumping for dd when I was at work it was almost instant; she got the runny nose, the makings of a cold that never turned into anything, etc. Started getting more breastmilk into her and in three days she was perfectly fine.

I know it's a pain to pump but in your case you have the perfect setup for it; I would really give that an honest effort for a couple weeks and see if it helps.

I wish I could - I was going to mention that in my OP I have IGT and have only ever been able to nurse for comfort. Even on herbs and domperidone I produce drops of milk only (think like 10mililiters per feeding) So possibly that is why they are so prone to the colds.

Thanks for the help mamas and sorry for the silly question - all the snot and their little raw red noses from constant wiping make me sad sometimes...

To help boost my kiddos' immune systems I supplement Vit D in the winter, as well as probiotics and a daily dose of Elderberry (they each get half a tablet of New Chapter's Immunity Take Care). We started that regimen last winter and it made a huge difference from the winter before. HTH!

oh, in that case I'm sorry if I sounded pushy! In that case I say splurge on those "boogie wipes" they sell and i know this sounds weird but my ds stole my tube of lanolin thinking it was vaseline and now rubs it on his "ouches" and wow it works! mabe it would help with their noses? that or regular vaseline, or vitamin e. and for preventing the colds, vitamin c of course and my grandma swore by garlic...they used to actually tie it around the kids' chests but i'm sure eating it does the same thing. what about that "airborne" stuff...have you tried that?
