Need ideas on gettin my exercise....

We co-sleep and Dh works nights Mon-Fri. The only time I have to exercise is in the morning before work. (WOHM) It worked out great before Dh went on nights. He was there to tend to Ds while I ran on the treadmill in the other room.

I really got picked on (in a loving way) by my WW leader last night. I haven't exercised in a while. She made me promise to everyone that I would try this week. So this morning I did. Got on the treadmill at 5:20am. Ds woke at 5:26am. Got Ds back to sleep and got back on the treadmill at 5:46am. Ds woke again at 5:52am. At 6:05am, Ds still was not asleep and I had to start getting ready for work. So I got a total of 12 min of exercise this morning.

Any suggestions?

Can you walk during your lunch break? I face a similar problem, and I should be walking during my lunch break! I don't know what kind of work you do, but you could also try fitting in activity during your day (taking the stairs, getting up and walking around very hour, doing toning exercises at your desk if you have enough privacy to do so). Again, it's so easy to give suggestions, but so hard for me to do!
Well, I only have a half hour lunch and I do like to spend that time eating. (obviously)

Ds likes to be pulled around in his wagon. If I did that each night would that count? My WW leader says 3 times a week at least 20 minutes each time. But, pulling his wagon is done at such a slow pace. I think of exercise as working up a sweat and heaving breathing.

do you have a stroller? my dd LOVES being in the jogger. But any stroller would do. I give her snacks when she gets restless and bring along books. When we're walking I point out stuff like trucks, trees, etc.
I did manage to get my exercise in yesterday. When I got home, I ate dinner and put Ds in the Ergo and off we went down the rock road that goes in front of our house. (we live in farm area) I got about 1/4 way down the road and looked back to make sure no cars were coming and I see Dh with our dog running toward us. He decided to join us. So we ended up walking for about 1/2 hour. It was very nice. We talked about doing it more often.

I did set my alarm this morning for 5am to try to exercise again this morning but Ds woke up with the alarm and it took about 20 min to get him back to sleep. By that time I said forget about it and reset the alarm for 6:15am. I'll try to go for a walk again this evening to make up for it. I can't give up trying. If I go back to my WW meeting next week and say that I didn't exercise at least 3 times this week I'll be in a world of trouble.

That sounds perfect! I don't think that you have to get super out of breath or start sweating profusely to have it count. Get your heart rate up and sustain it for 30 minutes.

It also helps to do things like park further from your office, take the stairs, etc.
I joked with my friend that it should count as 2 exercise sessions since I had an extra 25lbs strapped to my back.

I'm trying to get 10,000 steps (actually, want to increase 60 12,500) a day. I bought a pedometer and work at getting my steps in. For me, at least, 10,000 steps a day requires very conscious effort. It's nearly impossible to do without at least one half hour walk. I've read studies that suggest that people lose weight on this plan. It may be eaiser than trying to get up at 5:00 AM for a workout. Just a suggestion.

so why can't he be awake when you're on the treadmill?

Give him a few toys or pots and pans to play with, and go.

(P.S. I'm a Garrett's mommy too! June-98)
For a while my little one could be sat on the couch with toys and a snack while I treadmilled. Now he is too quick & aggressive and would be all over the treadmill.

They DO get better about the early a.m. sleep. I'd keep trying, eventually he'll surprise you by sleeping through your workout. I find that working out in the morning is SO much easier and I stick to it so much better that I would recommend trying to stick with morning stuff. Although nothing beats an evening walk with the whole family!
Another thing we try to do is every weekend go on one good walk with the whole fam-damn-ily. The big one rides his bike, the little one is in the stroller. It's not always easy - someone seems to be whiny at any given point. But it's a good habit. Sometimes we'll ask friends who also have kids to join us and do a picnic. In Minneapolis walking around a lake is a desirable social activity so it's fun to combine it with friends.
Stick Garrett in a backpack while you walk? Is he old enough? He'd probably go back to sleep easier & you'd get more weight to carry! Or him in a sling while you walk on tradmill?

I have developed this weird workout for while I'm lurking, not posting, on the Internet...I put on music through the computer & lift weights & do cardio while I'm reading posts...then get offline to do abs...I've got to lay off the chocolate tho'
