Hi everyone. Please excuse my ignorance, but I really need to get more info on UC. My partner is 8 weeks pregnant with our first baby. We are moving to northern Canada where we will not have access to mid-wives or doulas. We would prefer to have a home birth. We are thinking that there most be some local women who have experience helping out in births, we would both prefer to have someone around who has experienced at least one birth. Regardless, we are trying to education ourselves A LOT!

We have some concerns, our main concern is what should we be concerned about!? For example, if we were to see...we should do... One specific question I have is what if the cord is wrapped around the baby? Are there any other pre-cautions we should be aware of? We want to know as much as we possibly can so please share all.

Where exactly is Northern Canada? That entails a large area and there are different services in different areas. Northern Canada could be Fort McMurrey, AB or Whitehorse? Or the arctic circle?

hehehe, you are true, "northern Canada" is a huge area. I am movign to Goose Bay, Labrador. It isn't even that Northern for me, but for many people in "southern" Canada or in the US it is quite north.

I hope all goes well for you and your partner.

About the cord wrapped around the neck of baby; my last baby was born UC and did have a cord wrapped around the neck 4 times. All I did was unwrap it with dh help (baby was very slippery and "floppy" so it was nice when he was able to help unwrap the last 2. It really was not a big deal and was completely fine. Whatever you do don't feel a need to cut it, baby needs the nutrients and oxygen that comes from the placenta when the cord pulsates soon after baby is born. THere's areason the cord pumps blood into baby and like I've heard someone say a few times, don't mess with Mother Nature.

Good luck and HTH!

Oh I forgot to add that you might be interested in checking out the yahoo group called CanadianUC. It has been a good resource for me during my last UC.

Take care,

My uc baby had a nuchal cord too. 25% of babies do. It's not usually a complication at all. Do lots of reading.

Welcome Eh!
I am in Canada too, Manitoba to be exact! I would do lots of reading and I would recommend Laura Shanley's book unassisted birth. I found it exteremly helpful and gave me that final nudge towards feeling 100% comfortable with ucing!
Once you move you may find some supportive people in da north!
Keep us posted and by all means ask lots of questions there are lots of wise mamas on this list to bounce things off of!

Good luck eh!
