I have a 3 1/2 yr old son and am due in 3 weeks with my 2nd child. We are having a homebirth in Auburn Hills MI (near I-75 & M-59 junction) with a GREAT midwife. She will be doing our followup care after the birth but also suggested I call the Pediatrician and make sure they are "ok" and find out details to setup a 2 week well baby visit (assuming all is fine with baby, if not we would see them right away).

Just got off the phone with our current Peds office (our Ped, she, has been great so far but is part of a bigger practice, we have never talked to the other DRs.) I did delayed vax with my son, he was low birth weight, we breastfed, she was fine with all that, but my son never gets sick so he only saw her for well baby visits.

Don't know if this little one will be a boy or girl, but will be doing no vax, no circ (don't know how they are with that), and exclusive breastfeeding with self weaning. Only bare-bare minimum bloodwork (unless complications etc). Cloth Diapering.

After explaining the homebirth, midwife, 2 week well baby visit thing the nurse puts me on hold, comes back saying she talked to the male Dr that is the head of the practice. He says I MUST bring the baby in 24-48 hrs after birth no matter who sees the baby (unless baby is seen by someone from their practice in the hospital). Something about needing to do bloodwork (bellyrubin??).

I trust my midwife and am happy with her recommendations. I do not think I will be comfortable leaving the house and taking the baby in so soon (1-2 days) after giving birth (unless medically needed) if everything is fine. I want what is best for my baby, and Drs dont always know whats best for MY baby.

Anyway, sorry so long. Can I get info/recommendations for Pediatricians nearish Auburn Hills. Thanks :)

Try Dean Moscovic....He is a D.O. that a lot of us mamas use. He's in Clarkston near Sashabaw and I75 (their new location will be there). (248) 625-2273

I would make an appointment to see him NOW, though, so that you are "patients" on record...otherwise, you may have to wait to get in!

I was thinking of having my son due his 4yr well baby visit a little early, like now to early May, his b-day is July. Then I can ask questions and establish/set us up as patients. You think that will work well?
Thanks for all the info.

Yeah, I think so. Moscovic is usually pretty good about spending a decent amount of time talking w/you (assuming he doesn't have tons of patients....like, during the cold and flu season). Just make sure you remember to write down your questions before you go. Or, if you are like me, you'll forget what they were once you are in the office.

Just be aware, the bloodwork that your ped mentioned was probably the newborn screen ("PKU"). The blood draw is a heel poke that collects samples to test for inborn metabolic disorders. It does not have to be done at an office. My midwife drew the blood sample when she visited us on day 2. I did have to obtain the card on which the blood sample is placed (like an absorbent paper card), she didn't provide it. You should ask you MW about this.
Good luck with everything!

We see Dr. John Dorsey at Beverly Hills Pediatrics. He is an older gentleman (he remembers friends dying from the diseases that we vax for) and he told me that he personally thinks vaccinating is best but if I were to choose not to he wouldn't have a problem with it. We are on a sort of a delayed vax schedule now since that talk and he and his nurses don't bat an eye. We started seeing him after our old ped wanted to start testing on ds for dropping on the charts around 6-9 months. Dr Dorsey thought the testing was ridiculous and told us to go home and enjoy our perfect son
All of the nurses (except one) are really great about informing you that if you nurse your baby during a shot it is actually less painful for them. The one nurse walked in and asked me to put dd on the table for a shot... I just said "no I want to nurse her" and she said "ok just let me go grab someone else to give the shot." She didn't argue or make a big deal about it. One male nurse actually kneeled on the floor to collect blood so I could stay sitting while I nursed ds during his iron level check at 9 months.

Basically this practice is not made of crunchy people but they respect you as the parent and I really like that.

ETA: Before dd was born(at home) he said it would be nice if we brought her in within 3 days for her first WBV... I think we ended up getting there around 7 days or so but he was fine with it and didn't even say anything except that we were great parents with perfect kids. We also skipped a few of dd's WBV (simply because we were busy
) and I told him that we were behind with vax's and he didn't seem to think it was a problem and that we would just continue where we needed to and stop where we needed to but he felt no need to "catch up"
