Hello!
My dd current ped gave me a really hard time about not vaxing and is completely clueless when it comes to breastfeeding. My dh is insisting that we take her to well baby checks though. Any reccommendations on a new non vax friendly bf friendly (and hopefully someday homebirth friendly) ped? I live in Portales and am willing to drive to Clovis, Roswell and maybe a few other places (west Texas?) to find the right doc.
thanks!

Hey! I just moved from Portales about 3 months ago! I don't know of a completely non-vaxing friendly doc, but we used to see Dr. Gusman (spelling?) at Dr. Winters' office in Clovis. Their office is right by the hospital, in the nice new building. Dr. Gusman (pronounced like goose) is a great doc. She is a former breastfeeding mom to grown kids and she was great with my kids. She seemed okay with my decision to delay vaccinations for my kids, and I had a homebirth in Portales with my second son (about 1 year ago). She thought it was great that I was still nursing my 3 year old, and she said my breastfeed baby smelled wonderful.

I used to have a BF moms group in Portales before I left but my friend will be starting up the meetings again soon. The La Leche League leader in Clovis is a friend of mine and her meetings are fun too. Look her up and I hope you like Portales!

Tanya told me about this thread. I am her friend that will be starting up the breastfeeding group here in Portales. Our first meeting is scheduled for Friday, September 1st at 6:30pm. Location TBA. Please feel free to email me as we'd LOVE to have you at our meeting. [email protected]

To answer your question, I do not know of any doctors here who support non-vax'ing. The best anyone can hope for is a doctor that does not put up a fight or at least is okay with your decision as long as they are under the belief that you are only delaying, not going no vax at all. We see a doctor here in Portales and he didn't put up much of a fight, but his nurse sure did. I really get the feeling that the doctor thinks I'm an idiot when it comes to not vaccinating, but just kind of shrugged his shoulders, rolled his eyes and said, "Whatever." As little as we take our kids to the doctor and as short of a time that we'll be living here, I can deal with that.

Tanya can also give you the name of a homebirth midwife that delivers here. I have a friend who is currently seeing her (she lives in Clovis). I have met her and if I could've afforded her I would have had her deliver my 3rd baby (which would have been a vba2c). I was totally comfortable with her. Because the OB doctors in Clovis are idiots I ended up having him at UMC in West Texas.

wow! I thought we were out here all alone! Actually, I've lived here for about 7 years. First as a University student, and now my husband is the band director at Lindsey.

I didn't know there was a HB midwife in Clovis! I really needed her last year! (I found one in Amarillo, though) Unfortunately we had to transfer and ended up at the Clovis hospital for a very traumatic c-sec. followed by a 5 day hospital stay. Torture to say the least! (although, my midwife was there for every minute of my 56 hour labor, and she was in the OR with us! Talk about dedication!!)

Anyway, it is really nice to talk to ya'll!

Actually, the homebirth midwife is from Amarillo. I'm betting it's the same one! Leah? If so, rest assured that she only took you in for a c-section if it was absolutely necessary.

We have lived here for about a year!
