Need quick help - dairy in Trader Joe's gingerbread house kit?

920 Views 3 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  notneb
I called Trader Joe's this morning to ask if there is dairy in their gingerbread house kit and they said it lists milk protein as an ingredient. She guessed it was in the icing but could not say for sure as the ingredients are not listed separately for each part (there are little people, decorations, icing and pre-made gingerbread house pieces.
Does anyone know if there is dairy in the actual gingerbread pieces? I'm so hoping there is not so we can make the house. I'm sure Whole Foods has a non dairy version but Trader Joe's kit is affordable and has the pieces made.

Anyone know?? We would like to head there this morning.

I have no idea about TJ's gingerbread, but I have a quick and easy dairy free gingerbread recipe if you would like it.
Thank you so much, I would love the recipe

I didn't see your post until now, sorry. Here's the recipe:

Gingerbread Cookies

1/2 c. shortening
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. molasses
1/4 c. water
2 1/2 c. flour
3/4 t. salt
1/2 t. baking soda
3/4 t. ginger
1/4 t. nutmeg
1/8 t. allspice

Preheat oven to 375. Combine shortening, sugar, molasses and water. Add dry ingredients. Cover and refrigerate at least 1 hour. Roll out and punch shapes. Bake 11-14 min.

**Optional: replace 1 cup of the flour with whole wheat flour.

For a gingerbread house, I would make a template with cardboard or something so as to be sure to cut the pieces the right size. Hope that helps. Have fun making the house!
