A friend of mine is pregnant and needs a referral to an OB/or midwife at Overlake Hospital or Evergreen Hospital.

Thanks.

I can't help out with a referral, but has she thought about a free standing birth center instead?

The midwives at puget sound birth center in totem lake are wonderful.

I had my first baby at PSBC and recommend Valerie Sasson wholeheartedly.

But I would be really interested to hear about good providers who deliver at Overlake, as I am considering having my next baby there. Anybody have any info for me and the OPs friend?
No help for hospital midwives or OBs on the Eastside but yet another vote for Puget Sound Birth Center!!!!! It is just a couple of blocks from Evergreen and just absolutely the best place in the world. We also were lucky enough to have Val Sasson as our midwife (twice) and she is just a gem. I bet your friend would love her!
Remember, PSBC does not offer any pharmaceutical methods of pain relief and can only serve low-risk women. It is a great resource but not for everybody. Maybe if the OP comes back and explains a little bit more about what her friend is planning for her birth, some mamas who've birthed at Evergreen or Overlake can chime in with some good suggestions?

Here what I'm looking for as I plan my next birth: I want an OB who delivers at Overlake who is not c-section happy and is not inclined to rush new mamas out of the hospital. It would be really great if I could get a referral from an MDC mama who had birthed at Overlake with an epidural and had a good experience. My birth center birth was very fast and I went home a few hours later, and I am hoping for a very different experience next time around.

We gave birth to our daughter naturally at Evergreen 13 months ago and just can't say enough about the midwives there! We had a very positive experience and highly recommend the Center for Women's Health at Evergreen. There are about 4-5 midwives in the office and you get to know all of them throughout your pregnancy so that you're very comfortable and familiar with whomever's on call while you're in labor.
mutter, how long did you stay at the hospital? Did you sleep overnight there? What was the nursing care like?
Well, I haven't delivered (yet!) but I will be having this baby at Overlake Hospital. I've been going to Bellegrove OB-GYN and seeing Dr Heather Moore, and I really can't say enough great stuff about her! She is very calming, very supportive of natural childbirth/breastfeeding/immediate skin to skin, and does not push induction or make me feel worried about anything!
Initially I thought about doing a birth center birth, but I didn't know about the Puget Sound one and things just really fell into place with Dr Moore.
Every time we leave from a visit with her we feel even better about our choice to have her.
The downside is that she is part of a practice so there's no guaranteeing that she will be the one attending the birth, although it does sound like she will make an effort to be there for her own patients.

Good Luck to your friend!

I gave birth at Evergreen and loved my OB. I saw Dr. Dawn Russell. Unfortunately she wasn't there for the birth since I had ds on New Years Day. I had Dr. Dydell for the birth and she was great too. I had a less than ideal experience, though, simply because my labor did not begin on its own (water broke but no contractions) so I had to have pitocin to avoid a c-section.
Other than that Evergreen was great. I had an awesome labor nurse. They let me stay two nights (but keep in mind I gave birth at 8:35pm).

That being said, next time I hope to use Puget Sound Birth Center. I really want a natural (and hopefully water) birth, and have heard good things about the midwives and birth experiences there in general.

Well, that's the second recommendation I've had for Bellegrove. Good to know! Hope your birth is perfect (and you come back and post about it.)
OH MY GAWD DAHLIA YOUR BABY IS SO GORGEOUS!!!

Ahem. Just had to point that out.

I hope you get to use PSBC next time, esp. if you want a waterbirth. They have the best birthing tubs around.
I'm seeing Dr. Sylvia Lank who has a private practice right across from the birthing center at Evergreen. I *really* like her and she tries to make all of her deliveries. She shares call with 2 other doctors, one of whom is Dr. Dydell that someone else mentioned in the thread.
I haven't given birth at Evergreen, but it's very pro-bfing and promotes pain relief outside of drugs according the info I was given.
Thanks everyone for your suggestions. My friend is not interested in a drug free birth so I don't think she'd like a birth center. I did send her a link to PSBC so she could check it out. It looks like a great place to deliver. She also feels Evergreen is too far to travel so I will send her the OB referrals to Overlake. I did get a referral from my ICAN group to a Dr. Haines at Overlake. According to a doula who has worked with him he is great and very accomodating.

I had my DS at Evergreen with their midwives. If your friend wants a more natural birth but still within a hospital setting, I would say yes, go with the midwives there and not an OB...you can still have an epidural if you need it, and if there are any real complications you are right there in the hospital.

The midwife will stay with you the whole time, not just arrive when the baby is ready to come out. When I had my baby there, I did not have an IV , nor did I have any pain meds - it was about as natural as possible under the circumstances. I also had a really awesome L&D nurse.

ITA - I had a great experience as well. I ended up 2 wks late with an emergency CS, which was scary, but my midwife was very supportive and really made a huge difference helping me deal with what was happening.
Our daughter was born at 1:42 in the am so we actually stayed 2 nights in the hospital. Most of our nurses were quite great, especially Julie, who helped during labor. The nurses were a concern of mine as we were preparing for our birth, but all of my reservations were put to ease when I learned one could always request another if the fit was not quite perfect. I was very happy with Evergreen--they are a VERY baby-friendly hospital. Ours was a natural birth, my husband "caught" our daughter and announced her sex, she was placed immediately on me to nurse and I was asked to cut the cord. They have free tours--you should check it out.
At overlake I know CNM Peggy Kimble (or Kibble?) delivers lots of babies, plus has a couple of DR back ups at the Overlake. She is right on 148th near the hospital.
I had 2 wonderful L&D nurses at Evergreen, truely felt cared for by them. Now, my OB is another story...she should NOT be a Dr!!
