anyone have simple ideas for a 5 y/o boy birthday gift?<br><br>
my sewing machine will be back from getting fixed before the party this weekend so I was thinking a cape?<br><br>

I'd actually like to avoid sewing something <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/lol.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="lol"> but if it was simple i would do it. I don't mind purchasing something but this is a kid who has 60 people coming to his birthday party, and i'm sure his parents don't want more "junk" to clutter up their house, kwim? i always feel like a handmade gift is so unique...<br><br>
i thought a magnifying glass might be kind of cool too...

My son is about to turn five. Here's a quick brainstorm. Books are always great - especially classics at this age. Check out <a href="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/showthread.php?t=598490" target="_blank">THIS</a> post for some good ideas for books (it says for 3 year olds but the list by NoHiddenFees has some really good ones in it). A cape is a great idea or other dress-up. Pirate hats are a big hit and cheap. A kite. Checkers or chess or other traditional board games. My son loves shirts with things on it (lizards, aliens, pirates, etc.). Oil pastels for drawing. A real basketball. Kits to build stuff. Geods to break. Other cool science stuff. Oh, and transformers and all things Star Wars <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/hide.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="hide">:
