I live in Mexico and have not been able to find a sling in the area where I live. I only see those kangaroo carriers which I don't want.
Anyways, I've never had a sling or wrap or anything like that, but have a friend coming to town from Vancouver, BC and I'd like for her to buy me a sling.
However, I don't know where or what kind or how much they cost.

Can anyone from Vancouver direct me to a store that I can send my friend to? Can you tell me your favorite sling? Keep in mind that I live in a tropical climate, so I don't need anything that will keep her warm.

Or.....are they very easy to sew/make? I also thought that if I had some sort of pattern I could get my mom-in-law who is handy with a sewing machine to make one for me......??

There are lots of great Canadian babywearing/baby stores on line -- is there time for your friend to order something if necessary and have it mailed to her to bring to you?

How old and how big is your baby? What do you want to do with your baby carrier?

My baby is almost 3 months old and weighs around 12 pounds.
I just want to be able to carry her around everywhere i go because I also have a 3 yr. old. I"d like something comfortable and light because I live in a tropical climate. Also something easy to use.

a few ideas for you to mull over...

i bet if you asked around you could find a rebozo locally - people in the US order them from Mexico all the time. just make sure it's made of natural fibers and not polyester.

another thing you might be able to do is hit a fabric store and just buy some lightweight cotton gauze fabric for a wrap. you can check out mamatoto.org for instructions on how wide to make it (and how to wear it), and you can have your MIL hem it for you.

a mei tai would probably be a nice option if your friend can find one. preferably with light colored straps so they don't absorb heat, maybe one made of solarweave in the panel to keep baby cool. that would be great as far as being able to use it long-term and be as hands free as possible, but that might be a tall order if she's only got till the 4th, since it'd probably need to be ordered online and shipped.

you might also want to check out the FSOT forum at thebabywearer.com - lots of mamas are willing to ship internationally, all you'd need is a paypal account. and those carriers are gently used so will save you some money over a brand new one.

mamatoto.org also has lots of directions on sewing your own carriers, also check out http://www.sleepingbaby.net/jan/index.html Jan has loads of DIY directions for making a variety of carriers. so you could see if there's something you like and show it to your MIL and see if she's up for trying to sew you one.

Just saw this now, sorry I didn't catch it sooner.

The only store in the Vancouver area that has a good selection is Boomers & Echoes in North Vancouver (which is actually a separate city, just across a bridge from Vancouver.)

If I recall correctly, they carry the Ergo, Ellaroo mei tais, Ellaroo wraps (some), some pouch slings, Baby Buddha wrap/hybrid things, and maybe if you're lucky a ring sling or two.

But honestly, except for the Ergo, all the other ones you could make for yourself (or rather, have your mom-in-law make for you) cheaper and, probably, better. I've made both mei tais and ring slings (just make sure you use proper rings, not craft rings.) For wraps, you might even be able to find fabric woven to the right width in Mexico. You can't here!
