Well, yes we are STILL battling rashes with dd at 3 months. It looks like we are dealing with some sensitive skin here. Her diaper area keeps getting heat rash on top of the eczema that is already there. I am working hard on the no dairy thing to help (though that's pretty hard). I'm thinking we need to go all natural fabrics and wool covers.

Anybody else have success with a kid with eczema? What helps? What about some relatively inexpensive cotton or hemp fitteds and wool covers suggestions? I have 2 in diapers still so I can't spend a fortune.

Thanks

Hi Candice!

Bumping this for you.

How do you know it's eczema? My DD is having some rash problems as well but it doesn't seem like diaper rash, KWIM?

Sorry your DD has the rash. It's so hard to look at, isn't it? I think it bothers me more than her.

Kate: Eczema is usually caused by an allergic reaction to something so it improves when you remove the cause. It's a coarse, patchy, raised rash (at least on DS it is) like dry skin that's swollen. Sometimes he gets to scratching and it breaks the skin.

But the good news is that I've had great success with supplements and have been able to take him off of the list of icky perscribed meds. (immuno suppressents, antihystamines, and steorids sp?)
DS (4yrs) takes Evening Primrose oil daily and an additional zinc and vite c supplement. And flaxseed on the patches helps too (as long as they don't have broken skin). Here's a link to where I found my info: http://mothering.com/discussions/sho...threadid=82185

I'm so happy with how it is working. It doesn't keep him rash free, but at least it's minimal and I don't have to pump his little system with meds! I'm getting the same results with just the supplements as I did with all the steroids and other ick. It doesn't work for everyone, (only improves kids who have a deficiency of Omega-6 essential fatty acids). But take a look at the link especially this one: http://www.ajcn.org/cgi/content/full/71/1/367S

It points out quantities that were used in the study.

HITH! Hope this helps!

Actually yes. We have successfully dealt w/ eczema for 3 years now w/ DS. No problems, few outbreaks and his skin stays fairly clear. People don't know he has eczema unless I tell them.

This 'info' comes from my friend/mentor/mom of 5 kids. She told me put neosporin (sp?) on any open soars until they heal. Then apply euccerin (the store brand is about 3/4 less expenisve and works great) and LATHER IN ON THICK. Do this all day, everytime your kids starts to look dry. Once the skins is in good shape again, apply in the morning and everynite. Also right after baths.

Putting in on THICK is the key.

What are you using now to treat it???

ETA: also watch for food allergies, apples set DS eczema off.

yes, she has it in her diaper area, behind her knees and a few spots on her arms. i had some problems with it when i was younger so that's how i knew what it looked like. we've been mostly using generic eucerin but sometimes i wonder about putting it on her bottom so much.

besides dairy, we are also testing out orange juice, wheat, chocolate, peanuts and nuts. she's been spitting up majorly since birth.

anyways, she's here on my lap right now sans diaper...airing out. has anybody found certain types of diapers to be beneficial or make it worse?

The only thing that made my eczema go away was homeopathy. Usually the problem with that is finding a good homeopath to consult with. It's safe for everyone including newborns and pregnant moms so it might be worth a try...

Homeopathy worked for my ds1 who had severe excema.

When ds2 would get red or a heat rash like thing in his diaper area, using only breathable fabrics (wool, cotton, fleece-the covers breath) got rid of it. Any kind of pul or plasticy material traps in the heat (in our experience). So hopefully that will help your dd.

Also, in our experience, shea butter helps tremendously; and it's cheap!

And, ditto the allergy connection- wheat, dairy, etc.

HTH,
Kristi
