I'm ttc and planning UC. Looking at a lot of the homebirth sites cited on here, I'm seeing a theme "homebirth is safer than hospital birth as long as its attended by a experienced birth attendant"

I know midwives even have to make a living...but the implications are that UC is not safe. I haven't been able to find any studies of mortality rates, complications, etc for UC. Does anyone have access to this information?

The interesting thing about that stat Jen, is that it suggests an experienced birth attendant is the key to a safe birth, however, look at little deeper at it. Why is it that unexperienced attendants create a negative outcome? Perhaps it's because they are approaching labor as an intellectual experience and messing with the birthing process too much?

I believe that women have the power to tune within and provide the care that they need. Not every woman will choose to take total responsibility for her birth though. Not every woman will feel comfortable doing so.

I don't think there are enough UCs taking place that there are reliable information from a society of well nourished, educated women.

You can dip on into the UC support thread though. In the very first post is a list of UC mamas and the outcome of their birth and some birth stories.

I'm also ttc and planning a UC, and I've tried to find statistics, but I'm beginning to think there just aren't any. Maybe someone else has had better luck searching?...

The reason such a study will say that it is as safe as a hospital birth as long as there is a MW present is that they simply dont have any stats about UC - so they cannot include it in the study - I think that is all it really means.

I - sorry - dont have a link to that worldwide homebirth study (does anyone - I would like to save it) - but as far as I remember it the stats are only good for expected "low risk" homebirths. The stats for home breech and twin births are definately not as good as hospital. As far as I remember the study said out of 80 planned breech homebirths 3 children died. It didnt say why/what went wrong though..

The implication is that its not safe, but I can't find any hard evidence either way. It doesn't exactly say there is a negative outcome...

I did find one site, that was linked off of Laura Shanleys site I believe, that was a survey someone had put together, that was very positive about UC. The woman had surveyed relatively few women though.

Thanks for all the replies, and I'd appreciate any ideas, links, etc. I'll try to find the one from Shanleys site too.

I don't think that there are many stats at all about UC. And I don't believe that any you could find would hold up to "medical standards" of stastical reports.

However, in view of the lack of stastical data, I have decided to look into all the "wonderful" statistics that are available for all the assisted birth procedures. And I have found so much information on why to NOT go to the hospital. And why something is BAD to do.

By countering all the "you need this" and "you must do this" stuff, I have knocked down every argument against UC with their own stats.
