We *had* central air but it just bit the dust. 18 yo unit that can't be fixed. So we need a new one. We've just started getting estimates -- I think we are looking at $3500 to replace it. Very upsetting.

Anyway, if anyone has bought central air in the last couple years -- I could use whatever facts and peices of advice you can give me about brands and types of coolant.

Help!

We just bought a month ago, we ended up with a Goodman, 15 seer.

The most important thing is the SEER rating, it tells you the energy efficiency.

Ours cost 3500 in the end. YEOUCH. But our electric bill should drop

Thanks for replying. So far I have looked only at the Trane. We're considering the 12 seer model because we only need a 2.5 ton unit for our small house, and going any higher in efficiency would only make a very small difference. The 12 seer model is the lowest model that will work with the newer more earth friendly coolant. It will cost $3400.

Should we look at goodman? Any other brands we should look at?

Anyone know anything about the different coolants? R22 and 410A?
