We are going to be traveling for over a week and there is no way I have room to pack all of dd's diapers, so we are going to use disposables for the first time.

How often do you need to change them when they wear disposables? With cloth, I usually change dd every 2 hours or do a quick feel to see if she needs a change.

What do you do about nighttime? Do they just wear regular disposables at night? A wet dipe will wake dd up, so I really want something that can last 10-12 hours.

TIA!

You'll probably find that disposables will go longer between changes than cloth. Partly because it is harder to tell if they are wet. You could certainly change them just as often as cloth if you want.

Same goes for night time. DD (2.5) is a very heavy night time wetter and we haven't found a cloth solution so she wears disposables at night. She mostly sleeps through just fine.

I used sposies for a while before switching, and we still do when traveling. Especially with the airlines charging for extra luggage - yikes! We just buy dipes once we get where we're going.

Anyhow - it's best to change baby still every 2 hours or so, though, my baby would often go longer without complaining. I think Pampers truly works the best of all the brands, for containing leaks and going all night. For my son we went all night 12 hours or so, and he never complained. Those sposies hold a lot!

I'm sure you will all do just fine. : )

You can tell they are wet b/c that gel stuff they are filled with gets bulky. So, you sort of give a little squeeze/pinch to the diaper crotch and if its all puffed up (not flat and papery), then its getting full. Not so much by feeling inside (it has to get really wet first. and when its that wet, some of the gel things can get back out onto your baby- ew).

I know many CD families who used disposables at night b/c they say its drier. In my experience its the opposite, my son has always had worse leaking at night in disposables. If you have wool soakers, you might want to bring one to throw on over the diaper and make a barrier w/ bed/pajamas. (leakiness is even more annoying when you are travelling!)

Also be prepared, there is a weird smell that the gel gets when wet (or its something in the diaper). To me it smelled "stinky", probably because it was unusual.

disposables always leak for my kid
even the most expensive brands.

When traveling I always bring a couple diaper covers, or even pocket diapers to go over the sposies at night or when babywearing. Otherwise they leak.

and yeah, prepare for the stinky smell of wet disposable diapers... and I'd change about as often as you do now, if that's what works for your LO.

You can go a lot longer between changes with sposies. They hold so much more. Like a PP said, just squeeze the crotch and you'll know if it's full. I always use pampers when we go on vacations. I think they're the best about not leaking. The most important thing is to make sure that all the material around the legs is out. If even a little bit is tucked under the elastic, it will wick the pee right out. DH seems to forget this every time!

Thanks everyone! I like the suggestion of bringing her wool covers along just to make sure there are no leaks, especially at night. Not looking forward to the smell, but it is only a week, so I'll come back home and appreciate my cds.
