I'm hoping there is someone out there who can help me. I was referred here by a friend from another parenting board. I went to my OB/Gyn last night for my first prenatal visit. It didn't go at all as I expected. I had a c-section 18 months ago with my first child because my induction failed. Since then, I have been determined to have a VBAC with our next child. When I went to my doctor yesterday, she told me that they are no longer doing VBAC's at St. Joe's in Paterson. I'm devasted. I feel so cheated out of the birth experience I wanted with my son and now she's telling me I can't have that opportunity with this baby.<br><br>
Does anyone know of any VBAc friendly doctor or midwives in Northern NJ as well as a VBAC friendly hopsital, hopefully Hackensack Medical Center or St. Barnabas?

NJ is so closed minded when it comes to VBACS! St. Barnabas does do them, I don't know about Hackensack. I go to the West Essex OB/GYN group. Their # is 973-239-0052. They are pretty supportive of VBACS. I'd try Dr. DeGraff or Dr. Sylvester (they are both women, Dr. Degraff, a mom of three) first. I use Dr. Verdoni, whom I adore, he's very laid back about things, but that includes a woman's need for a VBAC. He'd be more like, "We'll give it a try, but if it doesn't work, no big deal." There's also a Dr. Fein there, I don't know his views on VBAC. Dr. Sladowski no longer delivers babies-I don't care for her bedside manner personally, anyway. If you use them, you have a visit with each MD throughout your preganacy anyway, to meet them all in case you go into labor & your regular MD isn't on call. They are all very nice. I've had four c-sections, and am at the point in my life where I accept that my body loves pregnancy, but doesn't birth. I'm grateful for my beautiful, healthy children. I have also failed to induce, so I know how frustrating it is. Give them a try, they have priviledges at Barnabas. GOOD LUCK!!!

Layla,<br><br>
You are so wonderful! I know that group! My sister has been going to Dr. Sylvester for years. I'm going to give them a call.<br><br>
I'm in Parsippany. I really love my OB, but VBAC is so important to me that I am willing to switch. I'm leaning towards St. Barnabas anyway because my husband's friend's fiance is a maternity nurse there.<br><br>
My son weighed 9 1/2 lbs and I was induced two weeks early becaus eof his size. I really believe that if I had been allowed to go into labor on mine, he would have dropped, I would have dilated and I could have delivered him. My mother had 4 babies weighing between 8 1/2 lbs and 10 lbs 4 oz and she delivered all of them vaginally. if mom can do it, so can I.

I don't know if you've made a decision yet, but I went to the midwives at the Childbirth Center in Englewood. Lonnie Morris is the midwife who runs the center (they no longer do births there due to insurance, they now use Holy Name in Englewood). The midwife who delivered by baby was Melanie Comer, she was the most loving, wonderful and supportive healthcare provider of any sort I have ever come across. As an example, she dragged the heartrate monitor into the shower to listen to the baby so I wouldn't have to get out while I was in transition.<br><br>
I live in Hopatcong and decided to go all the way to Teaneck because I loved the women who run the center so much. Holy Name was also a pretty good hospital. I had the greatest experience and I know they would do everything possible to make sure you have a successful vbac.<br><br>
I just cannot sing their praises enough!!!!<br><br>
Good luck.

jersey girl please check the numbers of c-sections and vbacs of the practice you sign on with. St.Barnabas has higher than avg. c-section rates. I've heard it spoken of as a 'c-section factory'<br><br>
there is a practice of midwives in Montclair-Avalon midwives who deliver in Mountainside. I only interviewed them for my first birth and don't remember what their numbers are, but they might be a good option.<br><br>
good luck with your vbac.

I just wanted to thank you for pointing me towards the West Essex OB's. I had my appointment with Dr. Sylvester last week and she was wonderful. Very supportive of VBAC and obviously very caring. She really made me feel like she was listening to me and that I wasn't just another patient.

melanie was our delivering mw, too! she was the absolute, most bestest, amazing midwife i ever could have hoped for. she really was spectacular - on her knees, wedged in a corner to catch alejandro because the little stool next to the bed was the only place i could get comfortable. she was simply amazing.<br><br>
jersey - if you end up not being happy w/ dr. sylvester, obviously, i second the birth center!<br><br>
& we were there a year & a few days before you!<br><br>
