Last night I had DS (23 mo) in his playpen was trying to use some cookies : to do DS's chewing excercises with him (we see an OT.) He kept whining and trying to grab the cookie b/c he wanted to hold it himself (we can't do the exercise unless I hold the cookie.) I explained that I needed to hold the cookie. He very quickly just started to cry and seemed to be on the verge of a temper tantrum.

I said to him in a rather exasperated voice "why, I don't understand, why do you feel a need to hold the cookie." I expected that at this point he would just have a tantrum, or just let me continue.

He didn't though, he looked up at me took a deep breath and slightly held back his tears. He began to explain. He went on and on between sobs with his explaination pointing and talking. When he finished he buried his head in my shirt and sobbed gently.

I handed him the cookies.

I have absolutly no clue what he said . I only caught the word cookie here and there. I don't always understand what he says when he isn't trying to get it out between sobs. He had put so much effort into it though that it seemed right to let him hold the cookies himself.
