Since dd1 learned to walk we've gradually worked on walking around 'baby plants' and showed her how to. I've placed stepping stones in ANY bed that she tells me needs it (pretty cute when she says 'mama steps to plants'). I've made very easily accessible walking areas, etc. My kids are great about it, it's ALL of the other neighborhood kids that are starting to run through all my beds. All the little bulbs that are starting to come up, the tender perennials just poking their heads through...etc
: .
I'm a pretty easy going gal and usually just say to myself, well they wouldn't have lasted long in nature if they couldn't occassionally get stepped on but some of the kids just don't seem to want to listen to anything I nicely say about it. I've actually gotten comments from other moms now that I shouldn't expect a 4 year old not to run through some very large plants? There are a ton of areas in my yard that have no 'gardens' and lots of area to run and romp around and this is usually where we are playing when others are around. There is room to dig in the dirt, play in the sand, swing, etc.
I love the fact that most of the kids in our neighborhood love coming over to play in our yard and like to think it's because I make them feel welcome. I don't want to discourage that. Anyone have some ideas for discouraging plant food traffic by little ones that aren't your own ?
