dh is interviewing for a job in chattanooga...wondering about neighborhoods and schools, midwives and such.

Hi there -

Where you live will be best determined by where in town his job is.

Do you know the approximate area (even the zip code?) for where he is interviewing?

There are good pockets of town and bad pockets. I live in the Lakesite area of Hixson, which is just north of Chattanooga city limits, and love it up here, but it would be impractical to live up here if he were working far into the city.

I used Katie Garrett as my midwife for two of my three pregnancies (one was delivered out of state), and love, love, love her. She works in a pretty mainstream OB/GYN office, and can lean to the mainstream side (I don't think she does homebirths, for instance), but is very open minded. She's a fantastic breastfeeding supporter, as is our pediatrician (who actually CLAPPED for me when I told him we were still breastfeeding after a year.) I do know that there are a couple of midwives who do homebirths in the area, but don't know anything about them.

we moved here 6 months ago, we live in Stuart Heights off the Hixson Pike about 10 minutes north of town. I really like living on this side of town rather than the East Brainerd area which everyone suggested as we were moving here. It depends on what you're looking for. Our side has a smaller mall and fewer chain restaurants, but has more local flavor and less traffic. I've heard most of the schools are pretty crappy so it doesn't matter as much where you live, unless you live out in the country or in the one spot where you're zoned for the best school in town. i've heard of some great midwives and doulas in the area. PM me if you have specific questions. look into the mountain mother's birth network on yahoo groups for more info on midwives, etc.

I live across the border from Chattanooga in north Georgia and really like it. Houses are typically cheaper, schools are mostly better (from what I hear, I don't have any school aged children yet), and at least in my area I feel like I'm in the middle of nowhere, but yet everything is still convenient. I've had 2 births at the Women's Wellness and Maternity birth Center in Madisonville, TN (about an hour from downtown Chattanooga) and both birth experiences were great (homebirth feel, relaxed about a lot of procedures, etc.). I second the suggestion to look up the Mountain Mother's Birth Network on Yahoo groups. There are a lot of great threads about a little of everything. I hope your DH's interview goes well, it's a great area, IMO!
