so we're trying to get DS to drink formula, but after 19 months of exclusive BM, he doesn't like the taste, especially b/c we have to use neocate d/t allergies. I'm wondering - can we mix something in with it? (it's not harmful to mix the chemicals?) like we were thinking vanilla rice milk to make it a little sweeter, like BM.

(the reason we're trying it is my milk supply is at zero being pregnant, and he won't drink rice milk straight or hemp milk or oat milk - allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, peanuts & nuts, maybe corn.)

thanks!

How about som plain vanilla? Watch out for the corn in vanilla.

Have you tried coconut milk? We can't but it's a good solution for many families.

yeah, the corn issue is weird. I talked to the allergist yesterday b/c there is corn syrup as the main ingredient in the neocate, and he said 'i'm not worried about the corn' - meaning, his skin test was only minimally reactive and I guess he doesn't really think he's allergic... I haven't really given him corn, although he has had cornstarch in certain foods and seems no problem...

we tried coconut milk and it was too thick for him, and then I tried to mix it with rice milk and no go either. he's picky!!!

My DS took the neocate no problem, probably because he was starving. It always smelled so gross to me. Can you just try to give him fattier foods and not worry about the formula so much (give him water if he's thirsty and concentrate on food)? It's not so much that the neocate isn't sweet, it's just chemically, and I don't know a stronger flavor that would overpower that. Can you do one of the Neocate flavors that's for a toddler?

honestly, right now I"m just desperate. all week he's actually eaten really well. I made your oatmeal cookies (used 1/2 honey 1/2 maple syrup b/c ran out of syrup) and he loves them! he also scarfed down adult serving sizes of pulled pork (made in crockpot with just apricot nectar) and last night chicken thighs dipped in flour, then oat milk, then crushed rice chex and baked, so that made me feel good.... but I worry that it's still not enough nutrionally. the other problem we're running into is he's pacifying on me for hours overnight and I'm literally lying in bed awake while he shifts from side to side over and over again trying to 'find' milk and we really want to be able to just give him a bottle at night (not like he'd do that so easily anyway).

I don't know if I want to buy the neocate flavor since i paid 47 $ for the neocate last night and he's not interested. DH also tried to give him alimentum this am (we had samples from my job) but he wouldn't even taste it after he smelled it. DH said the flavor was even worse than neocate.

Alimentum has dairy (casein, iirc) in it.
I sympathize with your situation. DS2 was not happy about my milk supply tanking either and did the same thing you're describing. It was so incredibly uncomfortable and a few sleepless weeks for me. Eventually, he got used to there not being any milk and was happy with just nursing to nurse, iykwim. He's still nursing
and I'm due on the 22nd of May, so I think he's looking forward to there being milk again (even if he is going to have to share it).

Have you tried mixing it in a smoothie for him? I know that wouldn't help for a bottle at night, but that was the only way I got DD to drink any Neocate at all (and even then it was about 3 sips).

good idea about the smoothie - I have made him smoothies and he likes them for the most part although the last one I made with acai berry and grape juice and he didn't like the dark color... but I will give it a try!

I have no ideas for mixing the Neocate to make it more flavorful. My ds takes EleCare (which is the same stuff) and it's just Yuck!

BUT, I did want to mention, if you end up buying any more, both Neocate & Elecare are cheap & plentiful on Ebay. EleCare sells for $48.69 before tax at Target pharmacy & I can buy it for $13-$15 per can on Ebay (including shipping). I buy it in a case. We simply couldn't afford it otherwise.

yeah, again, allergist confuses me. He says that the milk proteins in alimentum are 'mostly' digested, so it 'shouldn't be a problem' (he always says this!!!). so he said neocate was preferred, which is why I spent $47 when I already had alimentum at home, and now DS won't even drink it

Our insurance covered the neocate thankfully. At least he sounds like he's eating really well. Have you tried coconut water? It's more benign than coconut milk (and it's supposed to have a good electrolyte balance) if you just need something for him to drink at night when he wants something fluid. How much does he nurse at night? I'm just curious because the frequent nursing/drinking at night at that age was a sign of intolerance.

he just tried coconut water at WF the other day and hated it. can't say I blame it - I didn't like either!! I'm always struggling with the idea of intolerance in addition to his known allergies. He has always been a frequent night nurser - mostly for pacifying. I'm basically a human pacifier. no wonder he never used one of those plastic ones when he can have the real deal! He pretty much has to be on boob all night while touching the other breast. It's basically driving me crazy and I"m sleepless now that I'm pregnant (maybe it's all related - that milk supply is down so he sucks more trying to get some?)!

just ordered the vanilla rice toddler stuff. looks legit and I'll try anything at this point!!

Yeah, that's what they told me with DS1 as well. He was on Nutramigen but it's supposedly the same deal.
It helped his "colic" but not completely and never caused all of his symptoms (alternating diarrhea/constipation, spitting up blah blah) to go away completely. I was basically told that if Nutramigen wasn't helping, it had nothing to do with milk/dairy.... I think we all know how that story sits now.

Like I said, DS2 was the same way when my milk supply tanked from pregnancy. It took a few weeks for him to adjust but it did happen. He's always been a boob man too.

oh he's a boob man alright. he knows the sign for milk and when I get home from work, he's all smiles pumping his fists as he comes towards me! I just can't take the night time pacifying - now that it's affecting my sleep it's just sooo annoying. if I could sleep while he was on boob, fine, but since he's literally going all over the place all night long, I can't sleep like that!! guess I can't just slip him a pacifier? I read somewhere about using lemon juice on the nipple - has anyone tried that? (doubt it would even work)!

we had seen a dietician who suggested hershey chocolate syrup or kool-aid sugar packets.. so much sugar in them and corn so we could not do it but if corn is ok i think you should be ok too.
