Hi everyone, My name is Monica. I just found this site and I am still looking around. I just thought I would post this in the hopes that someone could help.

I have an 18 year old disabled son. He currently has CP, Autism, Epilepsy, ADD, and Kleine-Levin Syndrome. He is indepedent, for the most part, with toileting but he requires alot of assistance (sometimes total assistance) when he is in a KLS episode or when he first wakes up since he has all of his seizures while sleeping (about 7 a night). I have tried and tried for the past 16+ years to teach him to "aim" and he really does try. However, he almost never makes it. There are times that he is so shaky and unsteady that he sprays EVERYWHERE if i am not standing there with him. I find myself cleaning the toilet and floor and walls at least 4-8 times a day. We tried teaching him to "clean his mess" but then he gets more messy than the mess itself. I have searched for help on the internet and we have looked for specialty toilets that may be more suited for him but we can't find anything. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions for this issue?

The doctors just look at me like I am crazy when i ask for their help with this issue. To me, it is important since it is a sanitary issue. I know I am not the only parent of a SN child that deals with this. Someone please help me.

Thanks so much.

Well...in trying to keep this in good taste...we have tried to have him sit but he IS 18. He wakes up in the morning and has his first-thing-in-the-morning erection. So with his limited coordinatation, it is impossible for him to push it down far enough. Also, he has trouble moving quickly and it would take him a while to turn around and get "situated" before going. We would have a bigger mess than before. I thought about a urinal but we only have 1 main bath. The other one is the master bathroom and there is no room to add one to the existing bathrooms.

I know this seems silly to everyone but it is legitimately a concern for me.
Think about a public restroom and how nasty those are. Well, it is similar in ways to that because there is a constant need for cleaning in there.

THank you all for the replies. Any other ideas are greatly appreciated.

I keep thinking of something like a full size wall urinal. Other than putting a hose and drain in your bathroom to hose it down, thats the only thing I can think of right this second.

Have you talked with people that run group homes for persons with CP and other conditions? I wonder what they do.

The only other thing I can think of is putting him in adult diapers.

I see that you face true difficulty with this situation I'm sorry that I can't give you advice based on personal experience. I am wondering if he can utilize a urinal bottle? Has he ever tried this bottle method when standing? I see how it couid be rediculous to do the sit down thing and pushing or bending his erection down is not a safe practice, that could cause him an injury. I know of a family that discovered a trick to solve that problem for a toddler. They put a disposable cup inbetween his legs after he is sitting. The cup is tipped inward so that it's upside down most of the way and the however erect penis is up in the cup. When he pees the urine squirts into the cup but runs right back down and pours into the toilet. I thought it was a great idea. I would keep brainstorming about a possible container that he can use when standing, like a plastic milk bottle with a hole cut in the side large enough to get his penis through it. That would have a handle for holding it by himself and it would be easier to empty that bottle than cleaning the floor and walls and toilet.

I talked to my husband about it today and his suggestions were echos of what the last two posters did:

1. for morning erections: pee in the shower and then turn it on for a few seconds afterwards. This is what he does. He said it's really uncomfortable and awkward to try to pee in the toilet with an erection even without any motor difficulties.

2. for other urination: what about a urinal bottle that he just pours into the toilet afterwards.

This is what my husband suggested.

Mine suggested the tub/shower too. I hope something mentioned here works for him (and you).
