how about something colorful like coleus?

they're grown mostly as shade annuals up here where i am, but i imagine in california it's a much different story. there's an amazing variety of colors available. starting plants from cuttings seems to be very easy (at least the ones we grow in our office as houseplants take off and take over without much effort!), and they are also easy to grow from seed from what i've read and tried in the past.
