New Prefold Washing Question

410 Views 5 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  WickidaWitch
I just received some new IPF's from a co-op and am in the process of washing them. They are unbleached. So I know that I've read to wash unbleached 4-5 times. Ok so my question is do I dry them in between each wash? Does it matter what temperature I wash them on? At any point should I put some detergent in there? (I use Allens Natural for all my dipes, if it makes a difference.)

Thanks!

i have always read they should be dried between washings.
I would use hot water with detergant. That would get the natural oils out better. (i think i'd use less detergant each time)

If you have a big pot boiling them with a little dish soap wil reduce the amount of washing in the machine.
I didn't dry mine (IPF and CPF and hemp all unbleached) between washings and they worked fine (I washed six times, with detergent in the first five). No way I was waiting over a week for them to dry between washes so I could use them!
The many washings ( I believe ) is to get the natural oils out, so I wouldn't see why you would really need to dry in between. That being said I'm not 100% certain on that, I just don't see why it would be necessary for the process to get the oils out

I think I read somewhere that the drying is to get them shrunk down to the proper size??
Wickida- a question on the dish soap- could you just add a little to your washer to help with breaking down the oils? I don't have a pot that big,

I've added dawn in the washer in the past cause it's good for stripping dipes too.

I dont have a big pot either. Last time I did like 2 cpfs at a time. it took awhile...
drying does shrink them up and fluffs them up.
(why you should do it between washings though, i dont know. Just what i've read)
