I am new to babywearing, and my littlest isn't even a "baby" anymore! I just purchased my first item, a Mei Tei.

My question is for moms of older babies (youngest toddlers)--how often do you wear your baby? I find myself only wearing her when we are out and about, but am still holding her quite a bit when we are in the house. Do many of you wear your children inside the house, too?

DD #2 is 13 months old and 20 lbs. She isn't walking yet (but will cruise, crawl proficiently, and will take one or two tiny steps) so I don't want to hinder her walking, but she often wants to be held, and usually at busy times (when I am cooking, cleaning, etc). Would wearing her around the house help with this?

TIA--I am new to this!

I think anytime you're busy doing something (cleaning, cooking) and she wants to be held, it's ok to use the MT. I think it would take a huge amount of time being carried to negatively impact her walking. Actually, being carried can help develop walking, as she uses core stregnth and balance when being worn in a MT (or other carrier). My dd is almost 2 and 25 lbs, she rides in a sling regulary, occasionally in a MT or frame backpack, both out and around the house/yard.

100% agree about carrying not adversely affecting walking.

Congrats btw that you're becoming a babywearer, Kelly.

I carried my ds until he began to walk, at 11 mos. (see, not hindered
). Then he went through a phase of not wanting to carried. Just walking / running away from me.

He is now 18 mos. And I carry him through airports, Target, grocery store (in a Mei Hip) and such. He's still very content being carried. The best thing is that my dd and I can shop during his nap time if I carry him. No fussing.

I think you'll find that wearing the baby while doing chores will become a habbit. It's so much easier on you and the baby (I mean, the toddler). If you can master the back carry position, you'll be set. The MT does take some getting used to. But keep trying. You'll be a pro soon.

Cherish these babywearing times. My ds doesn't want me to carry him any more during chores because he just want to play with his sister. Sometimes, I wish that he still wants to be worn.
But happy that he's developing independence.

Good luck.

I definately wear them out and about and in the house when they are fussy, sick or fighting sleep. Snuggling on my back puts them out like a lamp.

Mine are 14 months and the largest is 23 pounds.
