Cloth diapering Mamas-

I've decided to go ahead and give cloth diapering another try with baby #2, due in 2 months (our first attempt lasted about a week with DH putting the kibosh on the whole thing). Now that we have a washing machine - albeit a mini size one, he's agreed to give it another try. Can you advise me on the following?

How many diapers do I need to start?
Have any of you tried the UTN organic diapers?
How many covers should I get?
Any of you have experience with wool covers?
If so, don't I need less of these? How many?
If I use those biodegradable liners, do I need to buy doublers?
Are rice paper liners the same thing and do they work well?
What else do I need to know???

Thanks, you guys. I need all the advice I can get...

I have 2 in diapers, and I think I have a little over 20 for both together.....so maybe 10 or so?

Never heard of them

How many covers should I get?
6? I am not a cover user, so I am guessing..

Any of you have experience with wool covers?
I love wool!

If so, don't I need less of these? How many?
You only need to wash them every week or 2, so you can get buy with less......like maybe 3 or 4?

If I use those biodegradable liners, do I need to buy doublers?
Are rice paper liners the same thing and do they work well? I *think* they are the same, and I *think* they are a waste of money...I've never used them....but I have a sprayer adn a bucket for my toilet. who needs liners. lol

What else do I need to know??? I dunno if you dont! This is a great place to find out though when something pops in your head. Do a search, and viola!

Blessings on that baby!

Well in my experience newborns poop every time they nurse ...at least mine did ...and that worked out to every hour ... which meant that in a 24 hour period I needed 24 diapers ...so for the next one I am planning on making at least 36 diapers. Once they get older they go through fewer diapers in a day ...I think dd averaged about 10-12 in a 24 hour period over the first year and now she's good for 6 in a day.

Nope sorry!

How many covers should I get?
It depends on what type of diapers you're planning on using ... flats and prefolds tend to leak into the covers more than fitted diaper would ...and with a newborn who poops frequently that means more covers ... I'd go with a minimum of 6 and expect to hand wash them as they're dirtied ... I'm aiming for 12. I really liked Bumpy covers by Imse Vimse for my dd but now I'm addicted to hemp diapers and wool covers.

LOVE wool covers

If so, don't I need less of these? How many?
The only reason you'd need less of these is that the stink from pee doesn't stick around like it does in the PUL and fleece covers ...if they get pooped on they still need to be washed.

If I use those biodegradable liners, do I need to buy doublers?
Biodegradable liners are not doublers ...doublers are extra layers of fabric to add absorbancy ...liners are things you pull out and flush down the toilet so you don't have to spray or rinse the poop off the diapers.

Are rice paper liners the same thing and do they work well?
Never used them but I assume they are.

What else do I need to know???
Prefolds (or flats), snappis and prorap covers seem to be the most economical way to go for newborns.

I like to use prefolds at first, my babies can fit in smalls within a couple of weeks. I think they start at 10 lbs (smalls I mean, not my babies
) I'd have a couple of dozen of each to start.

Yes (for those who don't know she means Under The Nile). They are not absorbent at all, I mean enough that you'll have leaks - even though they are really soft. I don't like the metal snaps, even if they are nickle free. Her prefolds are awesome though.

How many covers should I get?
I think for Jason I have about 6-8 covers. Right now for this baby I have three wool soakers, and a slew of others made from PUL that I have in my stash. Leaning towards the wool more of course

Any of you have experience with wool covers?
Not a lot, but I am learning a lot from my wool buddies! (Thanks Danica, Karen, and Candy!)

If so, don't I need less of these? How many?
Since you don't wash them as often, I would guess 4-6? (But you can't ever have too many <g>)!

If I use those biodegradable liners, do I need to buy doublers? I guess not. I like to use doublers for newborns though, keeps the mec. off of the diapers.

Are rice paper liners the same thing and do they work well?
I don't know : )

What else do I need to know???
Hang around here and you'll know it all - and welcome to the dark side

I have an UTN organic diaper with velcro closures and it's one of our favorite diapers. Extra soft and abosrbant plus it's organic, which is always nice.

Thanks, Mamas! So what I'm hearing is that with a newborn, organic prefolds would be the best way to go and then once the baby is pooping less, I could buy some of the Under The Nile fitted diapers. I'm excited to try the wool covers... Which ones do you like the best? I'm so grateful for your input
