My husband, two young sons (3 yrs and 5 mos.) and I will be moving to the East Lansing area in September. I am leaving behind a fantastic group of AP moms and am in desperate need to find an AP community before we move. Anyone out there? I am interested in learning about the area, great places to live, playgroups, preschools (Montessori or the like), and some genuinely nice folks. Thanks!

You will love it here! We have a great bunch of really awesome AP families. We meet at least once a month for coffee, but are trying to up that to twice a month. We have a NINO group, if you are into babywearing, and 3 LLL chapters. And there is a birth center that hosts a lot of play groups and other types of meetings. (greenhousebirthcenter.com)

You will have to ask other mothers about the schools, because my daughter isnt at that stage yet, so I really dont know anything about it.

Where are you moving from?

Hihi! Yep, you will love it here.

We've got a lovely community. In fact, I'm late for a playgroup at the GBC. I think the web address is greenhousebirthcenter.com--calendar of events there. They also have a webgroup that is quite active and is a great community resource.

A couple of the Lansing MDC-ers too have done the school-shopping thing--I'll bet supermuma can help with that.

If you're in town at all over the summer before the move, let us know and we'll try to fit in a coffee night or something when you're in town. We had a coffee-night before I actually moved here last summer, when we getting ready to move, and I met smalls181 and fireant and supermuma. It was just soooo wonderful moving here and already knowing a few people.

We'll be moving in Spetember, likely, but will be in E. Lansing next week! We leave here (Wenatchee, WA) and fly out of Seattle on the 5th. I would love to get together with any moms available and willing!

My husband will be an Asst. Prof. of Organic Pest managment...we've finally made it! After nearly 10 years of moving around the country and low paying gigs as students...this is it for us!

Thanks!
Welcome!

I am up for a special coffee night! How long are you staying when you fly out in the 5th? We have a coffee night set up here for the 9th (if you are going to be in town that long...but if not--special coffee time it is!).

I can give you the info that I have found so far in terms of schools....my kids went to private montessori for several years (14months to about 4 or 5) and I loved it...but then we moved out of our hometown and to Lansing! They were both old enough public school by the time we moved here, so we decided to try the free Public Montessori school in Lansing (it is part of the magnet program and you can enroll in it through schools of choice --if you don't live in the Lansing district). I really LOVE the teachers they have there right now. Both have been in the school for 2 years now and have had the same teachers the entire time. They are WONDERFUL.

The school starts at 4, but I think they are trying to work on getting 3 year olds in too.

There is also a public montessori school in the Okemos school disctrict. They have a program for 3 and 4 year olds that you have to pay for (i believe). I enrolled my children in that school for this year, but after visiting the school..I changed my mind and took them back to the Lansing school. Something just didn't sit well with me...but there are tons of parents who LOVE it, I am sure .

There are also a few other Montessori schools (private) in the area. The two that come to mind are the Montessori Children's House of Lansing http://www.mchlansing.org/Home.html
and the Montessori Radmoor School in Okemos. http://www.okemosmontessori.com/

I have not been to either of them, though I am planning to check and see if they have any summer programs for older kids. I think there might be one in East Lansing too..The Montessori Center of East Lansing, maybe?

Other than Montessori, I am just not sure! We are montessori obsessed .

maybe some other mamas know more about other schooling options in the area.

If you have any questions I would be happy to answer them if I can. PM me if you want!

And welcome again!!!

Wow, thanks! I'd love to meet up for a coffee night. We will be in town until Wednesday the 9th. We leave at noon I think, on the 9th. So, I'll just miss the one scheduled. I know we have afternoon plans on the 6th, and all day on the 7th dh will be in meetings...so the kids and I will be looking for things to do.

I am up for anything...well, almost anything!

The birth center is much more than a place to give birth. We have built a community that we call the "village" and there is always some one who can help you out with ANYTHING!!!

Can't wait to meet you.

Okay, so who is up for an extra/special coffee night to meet up with grieshop while she is here?

Sounds like Monday or Tuesday would work? Is anyone around on Monday the 7th? I actually have the day off of work (as do my kids) if anyone is free that day or evening...

I don't mind doing coffee twice in a week at all!!!
