New to this board

Hi everyone,

I decided to check out the community here after my midwife introduced me to Mothering magazine. My husband and I are planning a homebirth, which isn't all that mainstream, especially here in Georgia where the legalities are a gray area. I belong to another mainstream pregnancy board, but it's really testing my patience and comfort level. I feel like a fish out of water and like I always have to defend our decision to skip the epidural and interventions.

So hopefully I'll have better luck here!

A little about me: I'm 32, first pregnancy, and due end of July/early August. We live in the suburbs of Atlanta. We're really excited about the birth of our baby. I had a tumor on my pituitary gland that was removed last September with brain surgery, and conception was impossible before surgery. My doctor told me it was okay to stay off contraceptives since we were wanting to have kids but that my chances of getting pregnant in the next year or two were .001%. Yeah, well, it took one try
So we feel truly blessed that we have a little one on the way.

Welcome and congrats on your miracle baby!
Welcome! We are planning a homebirth too and I don't know anyone IRL (in real life) who has had one. (well, my midwife has!) Check out the homebirth forum.

Congratulations!
Welcome! I recently made the switch to here too and I am enjoying my stay so far! Hope you like it

Welcome! We're both due around the same time. I also have a pituitary tumor (microadenoma). I'm glad things have worked out for you. Hope you enjoy the boards.
Welcome! I think you'll like it here.

Welcome! We are having our third midwife birth. We love it.

I am sure you will really enjoy MDC!
Welcome! I gave up mainstream birth boards halfway through my 2nd pregnancy - so not worth it!
I really appreciate all the welcome messages. I feel so much more welcome and comfortable here than any of the mainstream boards. You all seem so much more relaxed and easy-going. And honestly? You all seem like you are enjoying your pregnancy so much more than what I found on the other boards. I think they were starting to affect my mood in the wrong way!

I look forward to getting to know all of you!

Thanks for sharing about your microadenoma. I had a macroadenoma that was 1 cm x 2.5 cm. I'm curious and hope you don't mind if I ask some questions. Did you know about it before you were pregnant? Has it affected your pregnancy in any way? Will you need to have it removed after you give birth?

Mine was causing Cushing's Disease by upping my cortisol. I had symptoms - weird ones like lactating despite never having been pregnant a day in my life - for years before we knew I had a tumor. My blood pressure was out of control, my weight gain was out of control no matter what I ate and I was exhausted all the time. I had no idea how miserable I'd been for so long until I had it removed.

Everything seems to be 'back to normal' except I am still on blood pressure medication (I think because of the weight gain I experienced and didn't get to lose before getting pregnant). I actually lost about 12 lbs. in the beginning of my pregnancy just from shedding the weight from post-surgery, so I'm only up 6 lbs. My only concern is that I hope the function of my PG has gone back to normal in the case of going into labor (producing Oxytocin, etc.).

Welcome, welcome! I agree, I am fully enjoying my pregnancy with my little guy growing happily inside. I am surprised that you noticed a difference in our fulfillment with being pregnant compared to more mainstream boards. I've never looked at them.
Hey, you are in my neck of the woods. I'm in Snellville. I cannot afford a hb and I am ok with with a hospital birth now because of the practice and hospital I have chosen. It's far for me, but it is a good compromise that both me and my husband agree on.
I'm sure your hb will be great. I can't wait to hear your birth story. Did you find out if you were having a boy or a girl?

Oh, I noticed the different tone here right away! It feels so much better over here. I love being pregnant and while I understand there are bumps along the way, I think a lot of it is state-of-mind. For whatever reason, the majority of women on those mainstream sites hate life and hate being pregnant.

I'm actually in Acworth, but my husband works downtown and it was quite an adjustment for me to move OTP. I can't imagine living down there again now : )

What's crazy is that with our insurance, I would be paying more out-of-pocket for a hospital birth than I am for my HB. I was originally going to a midwife at an OB's office before we solidly decided on a HB, and they required that I pay my portion of just the birth up front, which would've been over $3K (my insurance covered 80% after deductible). I am paying my midwife $2500 for everything - prenatal care, the birth and postpartum. I only have to purchase my HB supplies and birthing pool ($100 for everything) and my vitamins and supplements. I feel for HB midwives here in Georgia, though - I know the only reason that they are that 'cheap' is because they walk a fine line on being legal. I am so saddened by the system we have here in Georgia in that regard.

What hospital are you delivering at? I know to avoid Northside like the plague! We had an u/s at 21 weeks and the baby kept it's legs crossed the entire time (we were there for over an hour) so we don't know the sex. We are doing a 3D/4D in a few weeks and now we're to the point where we don't want to know the sex (our nursery is red, white and blue and gender neutral), but I have a feeling we'll get in there and DH will change his mind and want to know. So we'll see. Do you know what you're having?

I'm delivering at N. Fulton. I've heard Northside's c-section rate is like 40%. The hospitals near me are both around 33%. N. Fulton is supposedly like 22% and for that their policies are more flexible. I don't have to have a routine IV nor even a h-lock. I can and I'm expected to eat during labor to keep my energy up. The staff are on my side for a natural birth with any interventions. They are also the only hospital in GA to do water births, so I have that as an option as well. It's a good hour's drive from my house, but they've had people come from much further than that to give birth there. But, I feel good about the decision and I'm at much more peace about my birth than I was with the hospitals near me. Sad though, as one was just two blocks away from my job.

Yep, we're having a boy. I personally do not like any gender neutral decorations or clothes. Yellows and greens do nothing for me. Not knowing would have driven me crazy. My husband at the very last moment almost did not want to find out, so we wondered if I could find out and keep it a secret from him. We knew that wouldn't work and there was no way I was not finding out, so he gave in to know. Well, he was a boy and the tech did not have to tell us what it was because his legs were well spread and his part was there plain as day for all to see. So even if we'd chosen not to know, we would have known. I'd be even more obvious on a 3d/4d ultrasound so I guess you'd have to turn around if the tech wanted to look at his toes for example for you and he'd have to pass by that area. Do want you want both want to do. If you want to find out, go for it. If not, don't. Many people on here are choosing not to find out, but a lot of people do know. Let us know either way what you do. I think we have a thread or sticky about boys/girls or waiting that we could add you on.
