Hi! My name is Melissa. I'm 31, married to a wonderful dh, and the mom of the most amazing and wonderful 19-month-old boy ever!

This got a little long, so if you want to skip the history lesson, and just get to my question, which is what I really need help with, please skip down to the ---!

We had a hard time ttc ds (check out my post in the "philosophy of ttc" thread). I did not want to put a lot of pressure on us with charting and making sex all about ttc. The result was that dh and I both felt pressure but didn't talk about it, and every sexual encounter was subconsciously about ttc! I wasn't telling any friends or family we were ttc, because I did not want to keep hearing "are you pregnant yet?" We were already getting enough pressure to have a child without the added stress. I also had no idea boards like this existed. So, I spent a lot of time depressed with no support (since dh wouldn't TALK, either). My "no pressure" plan backfired big time, lol!

So, I'm determined this time will be different. I may not be able to control the length of time it takes to get pg, but I can definitely change how we go about it! I recently bought TCOYF and I am astounded by how little I used to know! I had thought I was relatively well-educated on the biology of it. Wrong!

---
I started charting on day 13 of my cycle, which is when I got the book. I figured charting now would help me get used to how it's done so I would work the kinks out and be all set to really start next month. I know the start date and length of my last period, so I know the cycle day I started. But I think charting halfway through has just confused me! I've been through the book several times, including the appendix, but I don't see any explanation for what I've seen recently.

Temperature taking has been a bit of a challenge. I cosleep with ds, who still sometimes wakes up once a night. Other times he sleeps through until closer to 5. I'm taking my temp around 5/5:30. I roll over to nurse ds, and then grab the thermometer. I know I'm not always getting 3 straight hours of sleep, prior to the temperature taking. However, I usually only wake up briefly to nurse; I'm not getting out of bed or staying awake long. Anyone know how much this affects the temp charting?

Cervix and fluid checking is taking a little while to get used to. I did not have much luck chekcing fluid externally, so I'm doing it internally. Since starting at day 13, I had white and watery for a couple days (13 & 14 creamy); clear & a little stretchy(15 creamy), clear and a little more stretchy (16 eggwhite?); opaque and stretchy(17 eggwhite?); clear and 2" stretchy (18 eggwhite). That seemed very normal, and the cervix pattern of medium to soft seemed to follow along. I also had a slight temperature jump right after the day 18 clear and stretchy eggwhite day. I don't have enough consistent temp history without interruptions before that to draw a coverline, however. My previous highest temp was 97.3, and this was 97.5, so it did jump 2 tenths.

I really thought that was my ovulation, but the next three days have been really confusing. It seems like my cervix is still open and soft, but not as high -and perhaps not quite as soft- as it was on the last eggwhite day. I know it's not supposed to close all the way since I've had a vaginal birth. But it doesn't seem firm, either. I have consistently been getting cervical fluid that is goopy, smooth, light yellowish and a little bit stretchy (only a few centimeters of stretch). It forms a smooth, slippery ball when I rub it between my fingers. I've called this "creamy" on my chart. It doesn't feel sticky. I've definitely had a wet vaginal sensation, but not the symmetrical circular pattern on my panties that the book says to look for. My temps for these 3 days were 97.5, 97.6, and 97.6, so they've stayed "higher".

Today, my temp jumped to 98.3, which is quite a bit higher than anything else I've taken. Yet my cervix check this morning still yielded the same goopy cervical fluid and the cervix still seemed soft. Although if this signaled the end of ovulation, I suppose it could still dry up later today?

Has anyone had cervical fluid like I've described? Is three days of creamy after eggwhite normal? Would the last eggwhite day still be considered my peak? Was the first temp jump on day 18 the start of a "stair-step" pattern, or more likely just part of a normal low temp variation? If the true ovulation wasn't until day 21, could the goopy cervical fluid mean there's something wrong with it (not sperm friendly)? Can a "closed" post-vaginal-birth cervix still feel rather mushy?

Maybe there's no answer to these questions until I've been able to chart for a whole complete cycle. I really wish the book had arrived a little earlier so I could've had more temps, and felt what a closed cervix felt like right after menstruation ended.

I'm sorry this turned into such a book. Thanks for reading this far! Any thoughts, support, or advice would be helpful... even if all you can tell me is to be patient and it will all become clear at the next go round, lol!

Three days of creamy after egg white is completely normal.
A lot of women dry up on the day after or even the day of ovulation. Some of use have a slow climb up to eggwhite and then a slow descent back to dry. I for one, have creamy CF until I have my period.

More than being about textbook like cycles, TCOYF is about learning your own cycle. I would take copius notes about what you are finding and don't worry too much about what it all means this cycle, especially since you starte mid cycle. Then next cycle you will start to see some patterns. And, if you haven't conceived, the third cycle will be more illuminating still. Just try to focus on what your body is doing, and less about if it matches the picture in the book.

Right now - you sound like you are on the right track. Make sure to read the parts about nursing and how it affects your cycle! Nursing can throw you for a loop!

Good luck!

Thanks a lot, Adina! That helps me feel a lot better. I figured I was probably obsessing about it too much, but I guess I needed to write out my whole thought process to gain a little perspective!

Someone else answered your CF question, but I'll add that your temps probably will be just fine with the sleep pattern you described above. If you aren't getting out of bed and moving and are falling asleep shortly, its ok.
I think like an hour or an hour and a half of consistent sleep is really all you need for temps. Especially if you are staying in bed the other times.
take care

My brief two cents

My CF is a LOT like yours and this is my first cycle charting in years. I've been recording it as "Eggwhite" because it's not "lotiony" or "milky", it definitely feels slimy and has some stretch to it. But it doesn't seem to have a really high water content, it's somewhere between sticky and eggwhite. And I think I ovulated two days ago. This CF has been about the same since CD14 and I think I ovulated on CD17. I don't know what gives but I did just come off the pill so I attributed the weird CF to my hormones just getting back to normal. I don't know. My cervix is still high and open though the texture has gotten firmer. At least I think it's open. I had a vaginal birth too so I'm not used to what open and closed feels like yet.

I'm confused about whether you take your temp while nursing or right after nursing. I would not wait until after you're done nursing... your metabolism changes just from being awake, even if you're not doing anything, will throw off the temps... so if you can take your temperature right after you get your DS latched on I think that'll help. (if that's not what you're doing already... like I said it was hard to tell
)

Are your cycles pretty regular?

I have seen a temp shift with the temperature taking, so I think it's working out okay the way I've been doing it, even with the nursing. I take my temp just before or as he's latching on. Latching him on generally just involves rolling over, if that! Luckily, ds has started sleeping much better, so I'm getting nice long stretches of sleep. Mmmmm, heaven!

I have never had very regular cycles. While ttc with ds my average cycle length was about 36-37 days, but going 40+ was not unusual either. I went 60 days before testing pg with ds because I kept getting negatives after testing on day 40 or even 50. They have gotten much better since I started menstruation 10 months after ds was born. My first couple of cycles were 40+ days (probably taking a while to O due to bf), but since then they've been between 29 and 31 days, with one 37 day in there. I never had a cycle day less than 32 days prior to pregnancy!

Twilight, it's nice to know I'm not alone! I haven't used bc pills in years, however, so I'm not sure that has anything to do with it. I've decided my cervix is defiinitely firm now. However, it's only the bottom part that is firm. The top still seems soft. But the opening is more horizontal than circular. So, I'm calling this firm and closed. The cervical fluid has dried up, too. Since our "symptoms" sound familiar, maybe that will help you, too.

Thanks for all the great help, ladies. I'm pretty sure now that the first temp shift I saw indicated ovulation. I guess we'll see how long the luteal phase lasts to see for sure. But, if it stays high, I'll probably wait until 18 days after the second shift before testing, just to make sure I didn't misread the O time.

Once I get a hang of the charting, it will be such a relief to know when to test. Also, no more second guessing when my period is supposed to arrive! Why didn't I learn this years and years ago???

Honeybee, it looks like my CM finally dried up today - 3DPO. It was a little sticky this morning and then nothing later. Cervix is still high & sort of soft but seems to be closing. Is this what's happening to you too?

Maybe we are normal after all
Maybe we're just lucky to get lots of EWCM from 5 days prior to ovulation all the way through to 3 days after.

Do you think you caught the egg? I know I didn't.

Twilight, hey, maybe we are normal! I have dry vag sensation and a closed cerxis. Part of it does still feel soft, though. But I still got some creamy yesterday (internal check). So who knows? If the last day of eggwhite signaled O I may have caught. If it was the creamy days after, I probably didn't.

I'm actually kind of looking forward to figuring my body out with the charting, so I'd be okay with not catching this month. But, of course I'd also be very happy to be pg, too.

The first month I charted I felt really confused too.

It took several cycles for me to figure out my pattern, and that was still even a bit different due to BF. I've been pregnant twice since I first learned about charting after #3 was born, and I feel pretty comfortable that I know what is what with how my body cycles.

And yeah, getting the hang of how my cervix feels at different times has been hard too. It is always slightly open, but when I am in my most fertile time it's noticeably softer and more open.

My, um... how shall I put this delicately?

My mood is another indicator. If I'm in my fertile time, I can't wait for DH to get home and for the kids to get to bed. LOL!
