<b>New Zealand Lactivism alert</b><br><br><br>
The infant formula company Wyeth is “sponsoring” a child and parenting expo in Hamilton New Zealand on May 19th and 20th, 2007. This differs from previous parent and child expos here in that Wyeth is the overall name, and no other infant formula company or baby food company is in attendance. They are planning another such “event” in Hastings, the slogan being: From conception (they make birth control pills) to nutrition (I’ll leave you to surmise what that means). The “event” has many of Hamilton’s child-friendly businesses participating as stall holders, and seeing some of their names really upset me. Some of these people I really thought should know better. Endorsement by association is worth a lot to Wyeth, and all these groups lend their fine names and good reputations to the organization, allowing Wyeth to continue its work of selling more product at the expense of Mother Nature. The bottom line is that mothers and babies pay with their health.<br><br><br><br><br>
You could consider writing the organizer and telling her how you feel at: (be prepared for a nasty and threatening response, others have received them).<br><br><a href="http://www.childandparentingexpo.co.nz/contactus.htm" target="_blank">http://www.childandparentingexpo.co.nz/contactus.htm</a><br><br>
Consider writing the Ministry of Health in NZ to let them know how you feel:<br><br><br><br><a href="http://www.moh.govt.nz/contactus" target="_blank">http://www.moh.govt.nz/contactus</a><br><br>
Consider writing the individual stall holders also. ( I haven't hyperlinked them, hope that's ok, because I'm not the most computer literate person!)<br><br><a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:eek:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:p[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:p[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:p[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:eek:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>; <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a><br><br><br>

I'm in the USA where the WHO Code doesn't matter at all to the government. I know it is the LAW in many countries, what is the status in New Zealand?

Sadly, kind of the same here. New Zealand is a signatory to the International code, but it's never been passed into law. The formula companies have their own "industry code" which they break all the time. This "expo" actually breaches the industry code, which says that the companies should have no access to mothers. The problem is, the complaint process is so lengthy, the show will go on ahead of any action. The industry code governs infant formula products, but essentially it is a free-for all for follow on products. These are aggressively advertised. And advertising toddler products really means advertising infant products, as the marketing doesn't confine itself to one particular age group. That's the whole purpose of branding.<br><br>
The government is no help, either. Our well child provider, called Plunket, which is funded by the Ministry of Health, also gets substantial funding from an infant formula company. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/irked.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="irked">:

Update!<br><br>
I had to go back and remove one of the stall holder's names because they actually pulled their stall from the Expo....writing them does make a difference!
