What do you think of this?<br><br>
-----<br><br>
Parliament passed a measure Wednesday that tightens New Zealand's laws against child abuse but still lets parents spank or otherwise discipline their children using "inconsequential" methods.....<br><br>
....New Zealand ranked among the worst in an Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development group of developed countries in child health and safety, according to a UNICEF report this year.<br>
The report, published in February, showed that New Zealand children die from accidents and injuries at a higher rate than in any of 24 other developed countries....<br><br>
Rest of the story;<br><br><a href="http://www.newsobserver.com/print/thursday/front/story/574831.html" target="_blank">http://www.newsobserver.com/print/th...ry/574831.html</a>

The United States still allows spanking.....<br><img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/headscratch.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="headscratch"><br><br><br>
ETA ~ I wonder what our rates for child death by accidents and injuries are compared to NZ...

From my understanding it is not against the law to spank in the U.S but your not suppose to to the point of leaving a bruise or mark. I was told this a few years ago by a police officer about my cousin whom I think was abusive.

<div style="font-style:italic;">Spanking is legal in Canada as well. Law differentiates that from 'physical abuse'. Go figure.</div>

it's not legal to spank a child under the age of 2 there, though, or to hit any child with an object, nor blows or slaps to the head.<br><br>
it's not much, but it's more than we have here...

Before I begin I will say outright I do not believe in spanking, don't condone it, don't believe in it's efficacy or it's use in parenting in any way shape or form.<br>
Now I am going to play the devils advocate, let's say we outlaw spanking. Fine. Where does the line stop? There is a lot of AP literature out there that basically says we should not utilize time outs, withdrawal of priveleges, reward systems, excessive praise etc... so in the end who chooses how kids are disciplined.<br>
FWIW, this would never, ever fly in the USA. Most parents here are way too mainstream. I think at one point they were trying to pass a no spanking bill in California and as far as I know it didn't get too far.

wytchywoman, I think that there is a line to be drawn with spanking. There is no equality for children. It is against the law for one adult to strike another adult in any way. If an adult struck me in the same way a child is routinely struck by a parent, I would have legal recourse. There is no legal recourse for a child... in fact, the right of a parent to strike a child is legally protected.
