I would like to hear thoughts on what UC mamas and papas do for the newborn exam after birth. Do you follow certain guidelines like those given in Heart and Hands for a typical newborn exam? Or do you go more on simple observation of your baby? Or take baby in to a doctor? If doing yourself are there certain things you consider essential to look for while other things are maybe not so important? TIA for your thoughts!

I took my first UC child to the dr......they ended up turning me because it wasn't "normal" to have your baby at home. But it all ended fine, the social worker was super nice and said there was nothing wrong with having your child at home, and that she would have done the same if she wasn't high risk.

I did not take my next UC child in. With both of them I did personally check them out per protocol. I did research online to find out how to check for everything I needed to.

With this UC I plan to do the same.

This will be my first UC, and I plan to do the exam myself. I've seen it done with my two kids, but I have Heart and Hands coming, and I will have instructions on how to do it, rather than just try to imitate what I saw. I've also got a pic gallery bookmarked of normal, variation of normal, and abby normal newborn traits someone linked somewhere.

My DD was born late at night, we didn't do anything special at the time. I brought her to a pedi the next day. If you don't have a dr. or pedi you are comfortable with, maybe a local mw would be an option for some sorta after-care/newborn appt?

This is a question I had as well. We read spiritual midwifery and it had a small section on this and so did Polly's birth book.

We'll have my mw friend come over and do it. I'm not too concerned, but it's one of those things that will make hubby feel good. We will go to the ped within the first few days to week. No rush, but we will go.

We basically just made sure they were breathing and had good color and no other obvious problems. Brought them in to a pedi at one week of age.
