Yeah, I heard that figure thrown out recently. Huh. Well I'm not surprised. Maybe it's just 'cause my kid is on the spectrum, but I swear you can't swing a Thomas the train set 'round these parts without hitting at least 5 kids on the spectrum. We have a HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE autistic community here. HUGE.

I was telling my friend today (we had an autie playdate...those are the BEST...<img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/thumb.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="thumbs up"> ) that I think my ds is the only autistic boy on the planet who DOESN'T like thomas. I mean he doesn't hate him, but it just doesn't register on his radar that thomas is any big thing. A train is a train is a train to him. All his therapists were so perplexed at first because apparently Thomas is integrated into OT and ST a lot for ASD kiddos. Ds just stumped them. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/lol.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="lol"> Oh, and irony of ironies....while we were out today, we took the kids to a toy store (they got too cold at the playground) to play with the train sets, and there was another mom from my autism soc. chapter there too. I'm tellin' ya....this place is like a magnet for autism families. We're <i>everywhere!</i> <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/mischievous.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="mischief">...Taking over the town....

I think most of us with kids on the spectrum didn't find this new stat a suprise. Our DAN! doc is overflowing with patients these days <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/greensad.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="greensad">

I heard that stat on the local news last night. I have to admit that I was all 'huh, you don't say.....whoa wait a minute that's one hell of a jump from the last stat I heard!'<br><br>
But, go figure that the news here made sure to spin it that the jump in the stat and rise in autism Dx is most likely due to the rise in knowledge and the ability to better identify rather then any other reason. *shrugs*

Oh, yeah. I heard NC has great resources for autism. I was curious if it was a techie place, like Silicon Valley, which also has a big population of kids on the spectrum. Interesting.

It is a huge tech center. Here's a link:<br><a href="http://www.rtp.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=page&filename=owners_and_tenants_largest_employers.html" target="_blank">http://www.rtp.org/index.cfm?fuseact...employers.html</a><br><br>
RTP is where my dh works, it's about 10 minutes from our house, and in the center of 3 major counties here, so it is a HUGE employment center. All the techies work there. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/lol.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="lol"> Geek central, dude. It's a mini silicon valley.

Since becoming a SN Mom, I have come in contact with more and more families affected with Autism. At first I thought maybe its because diagnosing was more accurate, but now I am not so sure. Just something is going on and scares me.

Apparently the 1 in 150 number is from kids born 1994. I just read that the real mercury/vaxing epidemic happened mostly for kids born 1996-2001, so these numbers will likely increase. And that's just one theory of autism.

He likes it as a passing interest like any other character (dora, sesame street, etc). It is funny how people assume Austism = Thomas obession.

I didn't want to start a whole new thread but since we mentioned Thomas in here....<br><br>
My local toys r us had select Thomas DVD's on sale for 2/12.99 today. Not sure how long the sale lasts but it was a great deal! Mine only had 4 choices that were on sale and only 1 had a train included. But still a good deal. And Owen is very happy with his 2 new dvd's <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/img/vbsmilies/smilies/loveeyes.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="Loveeyes">: <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/lol.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="lol">

I wonder how many "borderline" kids get dx'd now that used to just be a "slow" or something. In our case, ds would've been dx'd as something wrong b/c his issues are quite pronounced

<div style="font-style:italic;">10 years ago the rates of "chronic bronchitis" started to decline in an inverse relationship to the rates of "asthma" going up. Everytime I hear the autism stats, I wonder if something else is being dx'd less.</div>

Yes. Childhood schizophrena or childhood schizotypal personality disorder. It was a pretty common diagnosis in the 70s and 80s... often "with autistic behaviors" or "with catatonia" or "with OCD" or "with agression and ritualized behaviors" or "with cognitive delays" or "with lack of reciprocal social response." These are gone.
