This is just a shot in the dark but I thought I would ask to see what comes up....

My DH is in the Navy and we will be stationed in Newport in about three years for 3-4 months. We are wanting/planning to have our second baby at about that same time. We currently live in DC and have a FABULOUS group of like-minded friends here. I am, therefore, faced with one of three choices. 1) have a baby before we move w/current support in place and then move immediately after or 2) move just before having second child & give birth in a completely new environment with no support in place or 3) wait until we're completely settled before having our second (this, of course, I do not want to do).

I am curious if there are other like-minded mommas out there from Newport. Have any of you had a homebirth? If yes, are there any good midwives that you know of? Is there a good LLL group in the area? Any other thoughts, etc?

I would greatly appreciate any responses on this thread or PM. I am really just trying to get a feel for things. We lived in Groton, CT about 3 years ago for two years. So, we've spent a little time in Newport but not a lot. Thanks in advance! ~ Brook

I work in Newport but live about 45 minutes from there.

I know there are at least a few Mothering mamas floating around Rhode Island!!

I am a prenatal yoga teacher and doula and I recently provided labor support for a Navy family (who have also become good friends of mine). There's was a hospital birth at Newport Hospital - very positive, peaceful, natural child birth with a very open-minded Navy MD.

I don't know much about homebirth in RI....as far as I can tell it is pretty deep underground. I've been researching it passively for the last several months while we were TTC....and now that I am expecting...I will be researching more intently. I will definitely share anything I learn with you!

As far as LLL....I haven't been involved yet....but I know a couple of people who are and it seems to be a strong presence.

Hi! I'm a Newport RI mama and I love it here!
I have given birth at the birthing center here. I have only had c-sections though, because of complications and prematurity. I do know that the nursing staff at the Hospital here is very supportive
of just about every thing discussec here at MDC. They have had some water births (the first one was afew years ago and it was sort of a surprise). There is a CNM here and although I did not use her, I have several friends that have and they love her. I don't know anything about the homebirth situation here, but I just thought I'd let you know about the hospital situation. There is also a Thursday afternoon breastfeeding group at the hospital. It is run by some of the nurses who are LCs. I went for almost a year with my daughter (now 5yo). The moms support each other and the LCs are there to answer any questions. Also they have a warm line at the hosp.--you can call anytime day or night and talk to someone about your babe. You can also come in and get your babe weighed at anytime if you become conscerned about weight gain etc...
Most of the people here in the community, even if they are not AP or BF mamas, are very non judgemental about raising kids-- I breast fed my daughter for one year and my son for 2 1/2 years and NEVER heard one negative comment. There is also a nice but small healthfood store in town and the library is pretty good too.
