So my apartment neighbor has some annoying habits but the biggest concern to me right now is her smoking. She smokes on her porch and the wind blows it right in our back door if we keep it open. Right now its not a big deal, I just close the door. In the summer we will need to have it open because we don't have an air conditioner (and if we get one the only place it can fit is in our bedroom which will not cool the whole house).

What should I do?

I know she steps out of her house so that she's not smoking around her daughter so she's conscientious.

talk to her first. tell her that you know she's doing it for the right reasons but that puts YOU and YOUR KIDS in the wind of smoke. Offer a different solution like perhaps calling to let you know real quick if she'll be smoking so you can close the door for the 3 minutes she's out there??

if she doesnt want to comprimise, I would suggest asking your landlord to intervene. this is a health issue...not just an annoyance.

My mother is a smoker and she lives with us, so I know exactly where you are coming from.

My mother goes outside to smoke and our next door neighbors are our best friends. They have commented that they know when mom is outside because they smell her smoke. We live on nearly an acre, but it still goes in the wind. I can smell it even more than they can if my windows are open. I just close the windows.

I know how frustrating it is, though. I'd ask her to try to get a little farther away from you when she smokes. There is no reason that your kids (and you) should be exposed to this known health risk.

Could you just ask her to smoke on the other side of her house? Maybe that way the wind won't blow it into your door, and it doesn't sound as if you are telling her what to do- more just asking a small favor.

If she doesn't want to change a thing, I don't think there is much you can do though. She is on her own property, after all, and she can't help where the wind goes.
